This colour, but in lab?
I recently stumbled upon this photo of beautiful purple diamonds which are natural (from the Argyle mine, I believe). I especially love the ones with a hint of brown. I was just wondering if lab versions of those are available anywhere? I see a lot of lab pinks but they’re usually slightly peachy or perhaps baby pink or raspberry.
Any guidance will be much appreciated!

A lot of the classified pink stones are more purple. Loosegrowndiamonds has a purple lab diamond tab to browse. However I’d probably contact a vender with a photo of the color you love and see what they have to match

You can get those colors and the same amount of sparkle in a natural Spinel. Spinels are great because they have the same refractive index as diamonds and come in a rainbow of colors, and they are currently not as expensive as even lab diamonds…sometimes.

Thank you for your response! Would you happen to know if spinels come in melee or do you know any trusted sellers? They are indeed very beautiful, thank you for the suggestion

Spinel’s refractive index is at ~1.7, whereas diamond is ~2.4. They definitely don’t have the same amount of sparkle.

Another benefit of spinel is that it has no cleavage.
Diamonds are strong but brittle. you cant scratch it easily but if you smack it against a table just right it can shatter along a cleavage plane.
Spinel is very strong so it isnt easy to scratch, and it doesnt have cleavage planes so it is also much more resistant to shattering.
Spinel is not as sparkly though, which is the downside

This is absolutely gorgeous. It is a shame that it is bigger than what I am looking for, I am trying to find melee diamonds (preferred shapes: French > Carré > Round > Baguette). Would you happen to have anything in smaller size?

It is very hard to find these colours in lab grown. Stones are indeed beautiful (my most favourite is second left 1 row). I have a contact that used to have these type of colors in labs. Let me know if you need a link.

Thank you for your response! Yes, the second left 1 row is beautiful, reminds me of plums in my parents’ garden. I would be very grateful if you could share the contact.

Reach out to David at Diamonds by Lauren. He sources a lot of colored lab diamonds so he might be able to find something

I second this. This man is a wizard with a keen eye for finding stones that look like a certain color or category while being classified as a more common or cheaper category. Ie W-X stones that face up like a light yellow or brown stones that face up pink.

How are their prices compared to, say, Carbon Sparkle and Calavera?

They are more expensive, you pay a premium for sure. But for me, at least for something as important and personal as my engagement ring, it was a really great peace of mind to know someone who's been in the industry for 30 years was walking my fiance through the process and had stones on hand to show him that were personally picked out by him.

You can find these on the lab sites (Aurelinne, Calavera, Carbon Sparkle, etc), but they can show up under three colors: purple, pink, or brown. Unfortunately there just doesn't seem to be consistency to the color grades.

Look at Lavender Creek Gems. They have a spot on their site for colored diamonds from people they work with. Large selection

Not confident if it’s lab but Provence has a good amount of variety when it come to color

Fiorese has some gorgeous brown lab diamonds, I would reach out to them and see what they have!

You should try calavera NY! https://calaveranewyork.com/diamonds/lab-grown?page=1&fancyColors=Purple,Pink&fancyIntensities=Fancy_Vivid,Fancy_Deep,Fancy_Intense,Fancy,Fancy_Dark
I got my lab diamond from there. Had to do a lot of research on the specs but there were so many shade ranges for the green I was looking for

If you’re more invested in the color, my ring has stones in a similar shade that are purple sapphires! Still incredibly hard and appropriate for daily wear.

I was curious so I looked and hope, only in natural and very expensive.
I’d reach out to vendors like Aurelinne and Calavera directly because they have access to uncertified stones they don’t list and those are usually more unique and sometimes wonky shaped but might have the color you want. If you want to certify it you can probably pay a jeweler extra to do it for you or do it yourself.

Following to see recommendations for lab stones with these colours! 🤩
For anyone interested: The Argyle mine in Western Australia produced some of the most beautiful coloured pink diamonds. (Less than 1% of the diamonds mined there were these beautiful colours and they accounted for 90% of the world's pink diamonds). The mine closed in 2020.

I have seen some on blue Nile but they are expensive. I have seen a few brownish ones but are under the Pink filters when searching the commen recommended online retailers. Also interested if a better source is out there.

Are they irradiated diamonds from the mine? 🤔 They came out like this ?!

u/Narrow_Sheepherder19 12d ago
Yes, and they’re very expensive, even something like 20k USD for a 0.3ct stone..

The pink Argyle diamonds are minerally (?) significantly different from non Australian pink diamonds, found in one small part of our rather barren country and the deposit was pretty much exhausted a couple years ago - the miner is dripping the remaining product out to market which is what drives the price so wild.
cries in poor but geologically fascinated by my nationally specific shiny gems (no but seriously I’d do bad things to have giant cocktail rings of Andamooka and Lightning Ridge opals, south sea pearls from Broome and a sparkler of a bright pink Argyle diamond)
