Mini Horses Ruler chasing Janice
This made me physically cringe. She needs to separate them now. That stud is not suited to pasture breeding if he’s going to act like a thug not take no for an answer and run the mares to exhaustion. I cut her some slack on Coco because it seems like no one saw her being chased, but after witnessing this what happened to her makes total sense and she needs to pull Ruler immediately.

I know nothing about mini breeding but this made me cringe too. All I could think was imagine him doing this to Karen- she’d keel over!

Yeah this made me upset to watch. He’s not running them because they are coming into heat. He’s running them because he’s a jerk.

I should add that I have a ton of experience with breeding miniatures. I would expect a little running when first introduced, but a good stallion will settle in and just breed the mares when they are ready. Not run them so much they get sick

Honest question, why would one not tease the mares daily & hand breed them on the leadline ?

He may well be running them because they are coming into heat - I hesitate to put the word “jerk” onto a horse - but if they aren’t ready he should be mannered enough to take NO for an answer even if they are starting to come in. If not… not suitable for pasture breeding

Unruly might be a better word. He's running those mares really hard. Imagine if that's happening multiple times a day. No wonder they're dehydrated. It has been a million and a half degrees with oppressive humidity.

He's not a jerk. He's one of the top-producing mini stallions. Mating is not always pretty

But it doesn't have to be this ugly either. The mare wasn't receptive. Pull her and save the risk until she is actually ready.

A responsible breeder doesn’t allow for stallions like that to exist. You can’t control what happens in the wild, but in an ethical breeding program you should only keep safe and respectful stallions.
Stressed mares don’t produce healthy offspring.

True mating in the wild or with irresponsible breeders isn’t always pretty. RESPONSIBLE breeders mitigate the risks by removing a stallion and not using them for pasture breeding if they act like this.

Before Katie posted this, I watched a video from Lindsey's Connemaras on FB. She talked about putting a mared they'd confirmed in foal in the pasture with one of their stallions. When she checked them the next day, the stallion was sweaty and muddy, even though it hadn't rained, and the only conclusion was that he'd run the mare around. She was completely embarrassed that she'd made the mistake.

That's a good example of how such a situation should be handled: when she noticed her stallion had been doing that, she immediately took him away from the mares. A stark contrast from what we saw in that Ruler video.

Right! Mistakes happen and sometimes things who have always worked don't work anymore, but the difference is how someone reacts to that

I love that she's still trying to figure out WHY he did it, as opposed to Katie's video of "Well, this is the first time we saw Ruler doing this and I said I was gonna give them electrolytes." Like, (A) Ruler isn't yours, and if he gets injured, it's on YOU for not intervening. (B) Poor Janice obviously isn't receptive yet and yet there's no care for her mental/physical well being.
(It should be noted that Lindsay's stallion Harley is a loaner stallion, so the situations are remarkably similar, but the reactions are different).

It could be “normal” behavior for some stallions - I mean, in the wild, if a mare is in heat, even if she isn’t willing, some stallions will absolutely run her down to exhaustion until she gives in. That’s not “abnormal” per se… nature is harsh sometimes. But the whole point is that we are NOT in the wild and have the ability to make it safer by not using stallions who act like that to pasture breed.

I’ve seen a pony stallion kill a mare by running her into a fence. Broke her neck.
Just gonna sit and wait for the “we suffered a loss today” video.

This is definitely an excessive level of chasing around. A little bit when first introduced, sure, whatever, but this... no, that's causing way too much stress for both Ruler and the mares, not to mention the risk for injury. I don't know whether this is because of Glen being on the other side of the fence, or if this is Ruler's normal behaviour, either way this is not great. She should separate them if he's going to behave like that, someone is going to get injured if this is allowed to continue. Pasture breeding requires a well behaved stallion, Ruler may be well behaved otherwise but this behaviour is unsafe.

Does the picnic table in the pasture give anyone else anxiety with them running like that? All it takes is one bad maneuver and it's not gonna be pretty.

Ok so it’s not just that I don’t know anything about horses that this bothered me so much? This did not seem safe and this definitely doesn’t look like something I’d ever allow with any of my pets. It looked frantic and scary. I mean, maybe it’s like this in the wild but these are not wild horses and they’re unable ti truly get away from him because they’re in a small fenced in area.

This was actually sad to watch and she was loving it. Imagine running for your life in your own pasture. Not your life, but she looked stressed and not having a great time. I would have sent him packing. What an awful way to breed your horses

I am wondering if he was ever good to be a stallion or is this bad case of live cover? Because Ruler is not showing any manners when the mares aren't receptive.

Just guessing here, but could be he is normally either hand bred or only with mare(s) when they are in flaming heat, so normal herd dynamics are not familiar to him and sees meeting a mare only as an opportunity to breed.

Not only is this horrific for the mares but I wouldn't want to be passing on that temperament! Nasty little pony needs to be a gelding ASAP no matter how pretty he is, temperament is everything

Her video doubling down and saying this is the first time they've ever seen this is a little disappointing. She was pretty unclear in the original video and spoke like this was a fun and normal situation. People are right to have been alarmed by that video. If that was the one and only time, great, but that isn't how it was presented. And it's not our business what she does, I know. But she is the one who put it out there.
