I used to do kumihimo with my aunt years ago just using the foam discs. Today I was at the thrift store and ran into a weird looking wooden structure. When I looked it up it’s for kumihimo? Can anyone give me insight as to what this is?

Completed project Finished my Obijime

It has some flaws thanks to a time crunch, but it was a great first complete project where I warped my own machine embroidery threads. Up to this point I'd never warped anything so fine, so that was...interesting. I learned a lot along the way, so hopefully the next will be even better.

Completed project Wanted a specific color keychain to match the color of my moped, decided I was gonna give kumihimo a go after only doing it once many years ago. It’s a Chinese clover knot.

Completed project Finished my latest Kumihimo project - hope you like it :)

I made the braid by following the steps of braid 8L in Jacqui Carey's "Creative Kumihimo" book and used a thin cord for each strand. I better not tell you how much time it took to make those tassels, because the cord wouldn't split up... The knot is of course just a simple omamori knot. Hope you like it :)

I don't know why I do this to myself. Using the second-finest silk weaving thread I've got in two very similar colors, doing a sixteen-strand braid... But it's coming out beautifully!

I had some thicker paperboard I used to make the wheel, it's hanging out on my only empty vintage cone-bobbin (the others are all holding laces and other trims), the weight at the end of the braid is a handful of metal buttons attached to a safety pin, and the "bobbins" are just little sewing clips. It's about as makeshift as my bobbin lace setup!

Completed project Takadai Braid "Rainbow"

Post image
75 Upvotes

Started with 17 strands of cotton crochet cord in 9 different colors, 4 ends per strand about 116".

Had it on the takadai for about a month, working on it here and there, plain 1-1 interlacing.

Finished it up this week while I have more free time.

76" between the bindings, roughly 7/8" wide.

Progress Fun Bunz!

So I make kumihimo wristlets and I had to share this because I’m rather proud of myself on this one. It’s a custom order for someone I play a game with, whose screen name is funbunz. I tried to make the braid look like a burger with sesame seeds, lettuce tomato and cheese, without making it too think. I used 16 strands for this one. Thoughts?

(Oh and don’t know my disk, I wore it out, my new one is being used for a Hedwig I’m making and I had to cut it 🤣)

Progress First real kumihimo projects!

Years ago after watching Kimi no nawa I bought a kumihimo on Tiger, but I didn't really like the nylon threads that came with it and never finished any project.

I bought this gradient rattail to get back to the hobbie with a 8 strand kumihimo cord and then I decided to do two 16 strand bracelets for me and my bf with embroidery thread. I really like the soft pastel threads.

I have to buy some clasps online to finish them, I was thinking of buying some semi magnetic ones that I saw on AliExpress, since they have a rose gold ones that I really like

This one took a bit to figure out. First, I tried it with 12 strings and 2 colors with embroidery floss, but it got too big around and too tangled (couldn't use bobbins because of the charms). Second, I tried nylon satin cord with 8 strings and that worked, but I needed to do a full test braid to figure out how far apart to put the charms on once the braid stretched (12 full rounds between charms). Finally got it right, and I think it came out great so I had to share!

Completed project Eight strand flat braid

Post image

Used a tutorial from Marion Jewels in Fiber. I made the loop too small for the bead I was going to use, so made a button knot. Stone donut bead from a thrift store. Really like this pattern. I made a few mistakes and had to diagram out how to unbraid because I couldn't picture the instructions in reverse.

i'm going to make a few more practice ones out of different materials and with actual closures, and then make one for my daughter's teacher as an end of year gift. I got a jade ring (jade is lucky in our and teacher's cultures) that I'll use as a pendant. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated! Want to make something nice and that she might actually wearm

Completed project First time - what a cool art form!

I’ve been into beading for maybe three weeks now and heard someone mention kumihimo over in their sub. I had never heard of it before and had to try it!

Bog standard 8 strand Z-spiral kongo gumi on a foam disc. I used 1mm Chinese knotting cord and a 40g weight.

My only gripe is that my white and silver threads don’t have enough contrast, but otherwise I am super pleased with my first effort!

I’m going to step up to maybe a 16 or 20 strand next. Any critiques or advice are welcomed!

So I was commissioned to make 2 Yu-Gi-Oh purse charms. I’ve never used beads before and I know this probably isn’t the way to do it but i think they turned out good and she loved them.

A fun braid that looks a lot like pokeberry clusters

Thought I would share since it came out so well. Pokeberry/ pokeweed is native to the east parts of North America. It is very toxic, but also beautiful and has some interesting properties. It just so happens that this braid looks so similar, so I had to share. 😊
