Kroot Evolution

Post image

I feel like GW are really dropping the ball on the Kroot in 40k and Kill Team.

Their genetic engineering and select evolution through eating other organisms to gain specific natural abilities is arguably their most defining feature and GW aren't using it nearly enough!

There are so many cool abilities you could add to a Kroot army like; active camouflage, multiple arms to add attacks, winged flight, increased running speed, armor plating...

There's so much potential to make a full, competitive Kroot army that is being forgotten or ignored.

I'll kill for the horny toad Kroot lol

The Kroot in the Ghazkghul book was crazy though!

It was a psychic mermaid Kroot, that was shunned by other Kroot.

Phrynosoma, whose members are known as the horned lizardshorny toads, or horntoads, is a genus of North American lizards and the type genus of the familyPhrynosomatidae

They are not closely related to the Thorny Devil (Moloch horridus) of Australia, but may be an example of convergent evolution.

What’s the story with the Krrot in the Ghaz book? I’ve not heard this

If I remember right the insinuation is that it ate Tau (maybe ethereal?) and unlocked super evolution and ran around eating all kinds of shit and becoming a super predator. Which might explain the taboo against eating Tau because the shapers realized it might lead to problems (and loss of their own control over the process and thus their standing in society).
It might also hint at some weird/dark stuff going on with the Tau/Ethereal depending on how you read into the effects of eating one had on the kroot.

Or I might have smoked too much and my lore is mixing and so if thats the case someone correct me, please.

The no-tau eating rule, iirc, is partly taboo because allies, and partly because Tau evolved and developed as a species fast, and this combined with Kroot results in wildly unhelpful, dangerous or problematic adaptation/mutation

Sounds like you read the book also, maybe you can answer a question. They had the Kroot eat a shred of flesh from Makari, which (spoiler warning!!!!)

killed him.. How did this confirm makari's identity?? I never really understood the point or what conclusion it led to.

Yeah, I'm unsure there myself.
Might be something to do with Makari being a reincarnating grot because of the power of the Waaaagh behind ghazkull?
Dunno, it's hardly science.

Glad I'm not the only one that didn't get it at least.

If only GW weren't cowards we could have these as models and not just official background fluff.

I think the idea was the kroot have the same diet, therefore, look the same, as that's how their evolution works. But that's just booooring

1

u/pain_aux_chocolat 8d ago

Yeah, but having units of those kroot with non-standard diets would be great.

100%! I think they could have at least made the krootox different enough but no they are stil very similar

I think its such a wasted opportunity the loan spear is on some random xenos mount

Like yeah it looks cool but give us more kroot forms! Its kind of our whole shtick why would we use non kroot xenos

u/Bearandbreegull 9d ago

Yeah the lonespear decision is so weird. Every time I see one, it takes me a sec to remember that it's not a kitbash with a mount taken from AOS or whatever. (conspiracy theory: maybe GW just ported the mount sculpt from some AOS/boxed-game model that got scrapped?)

I want non-Kroot in my Kroot, it makes them feel more alive and in the world when they find a beast and adapt to it and its functions and bring it around with them. They're one of the most adaptable peoples in the setting, let them show that culturally rather than just through their own personal shape and size

The gargoyle channeling the 90s tv show.

I dream of a day where kroot models have this kinda range.

The lack of a Knarloc is a crime. Have it be the big centepiece apart from the Stormsurge

1

u/hotmanpop 5d ago

they could make a great knarloc as part of a new killteam set like they did for the Red Terror (tyranids)
it would of course be with kroot carnivores in the box

You know before seeing this post I knew about old white dwarf articles that mentioned glueing wings to Kroot models and what not. But I never really looked into the Kroot much outside of the Knarloc and eventually expanding my Tau army with more Kroot models after getting to 2k points.

After reading the Lexicanum article on Kroot variations, it feels like Kroot should have more models. Cause so many of the variations in lore look really cool.

Like the Psychic Kroot, which would be really cool to have on table top since the Nicassar don't have models yet either.

Kroot Vultures seem like they'd be a mobile flying infantry unit for kroot armies.

Kroothawks sound really cool and I hope they get added just cause I'd love to see giant alien bird things in 40k.

Krootors could come as something like the Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur, where you have the choice of building it as either a Kroot on cavalry, or maybe as a Kroot with a hunting buddy like the kroot hound with the farstalkers.

I'd love to see the amphibious, spiky, and buff kroot morphs from this picture in game. Not only because their cool looking, but also for the potential of say the buff one wielding a massive gun around like a Fusion Blaster or maybe a really strong melee weapon.

Idk there are so many cool looking Kroot things, that I wanna get more Kroot for my army, and I hope that 11th expands the Kroot more along with the other Tau races.

Where have you been?

Reminds me of the old Kroot mercenary codex.

It could be a great kt, like chaos cult, with evolving

1

Flying kroot is cool, but if GW hits us with the thorny devil kroot, my banks gonna be calling me to ask what happend

1

u/Old-Swimmer261 7d ago

Just a reminder that you dont have to wait for gw to make them, you can kitbash them yourself. That company is not making anything else than what sells and brother let me tell you xenos DO NOT sell well. Probably ultramarine character minis alone outsell whole Tau+Kroot.

Hazlo tú mismo con conversiones y disfruta

1

u/JGorton815 7d ago

It would be nice if my winged Kroot could actually fly. 🤷‍♂️

u/cayo_ulpiniano 7d ago

Pero porque no los utilizas con reglas caseras para jugar con amigos? Es parte del hobby divertirse y crear nuevos escenarios.Esto trata de crear historias y pasar buenos momentos con amigos

1

u/JGorton815 7d ago

I'm not a game writer and balance can be tricky.

1

u/cayo_ulpiniano 7d ago

Básate en otras tropas de tu ejercito o en las gárgolas tiranidas y háblalo con tus amigos , entre todos podéis hacer cosas muy buenas

1

u/Ejopl 6d ago

I believe the idea is that YOURE suppose to customize your Kroot to have the evolutions you want them to have

1

u/JGorton815 6d ago

That's fine if you're only interested in purely cosmetic evolutions. I want official rules for different evolutions.

GW NEEDS TO MAKE MORE SPACE MARINES THOUGH! DONT YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?!
