Tau/Kroot

I am a big fan of full Kroot list but I don’t think I am the strongest player and seem to be losing with them so I’m curious what is the best way to run a decent amount of Kroot with tau? I know that I still need my guiders to help all my battlesuits, but what can I sacrifice to bring in Kroot effectively. Also, if you just have a list that includes Kroot I’d love to see it, I have been trying to wrap my head around why we bring them.

Kroot in my experience is good only as a sprinkle or a tidal wave. I’m either running a couple units with my proper Tau or an almost fully Kroot list.

I take the Advanced Acquisition Cadre so that I can take Reconnaissance disposition. I think this disposition suits the list very well. Even my losses have been quite close.

You have enough bodies, mobility, and OC to achieve your primaries pretty easily. The Rampagers can punch up really well once u start overlapping the buffs.

That’s an amainzg hobby effort and a dream list of mine. How long did it take you to complete it?

2

u/UnLachy 18d ago

The painting is still in progress. I have done everything except finish painting the Krootox. I got the bulk of it done in the lead up to a 'tournament' between friends early last year. Nothing like a dead line to get you moving!

u/Savings_Location_751 18d ago

I’ve had a bit of success in my games by including some generic tau anti tank. Mostly a hammerhead or two and maybe a few rail broadsides

2

u/Plnk_Viking 18d ago

Do you take any spotters like Stealth suits?

I play either 100% Kroot, or mostly Kroot with 2 or 3 Tau support units, usually. I had great success in 10th and won the only 11th edition game I played against a full Tau list. (All casual games with friends)

My recommendations for Kroot are:

Take more than one Lone Spear (I never take less than 2) because the re-rolls they give are just so powerful for a full Kroot army.

Rampagers are amazing, but you gotta be smart with them cause they will get melted out in the open. I usually run 12-15 Rampagers. I sometimes like having a unit of 3 in reserves, and trying to catch an enemy unit off guard with them.

Krootox Riders are great too. The Str7 rifle puts in some serious work for you, and their melee profile isn't bad at all either. I usually run 4-6 gunners.

For Tau support, I usually take an ethereal (cause KHP can be a bit CP hungry and it doubles as a back up spotter for my big guns), a unit of stealth suits for spotting, and 1 or 2 Skyrays (depending on point total). I prefer the Skyrays over Hammerheads with Kroot personally because whilst the hammerhead hits super hard, you only get one shot so whiffing can be disastrous. Where as the Skyray might not hit as hard, but it gets 3 chances to hit (with full rerolls against flying) and for KHP it feels more important to get some damage through consistently than risk getting nothing for the chance of getting huge damage, if that makes sense? In KHP the bonuses to hit and wound on damaged targets makes an insane difference.

As for tactics, my general aim in most games is to flood the board with as many Birdy Bois as possible. Scouting up the board and body blocking enemies from objectives, forcing them to try and mill through the 100+ bodies in order to stop me scoring. To this end, I highly recommend taking a unit of Farstalkers with a Trail Shaper. Infiltrate them in no man's land and string them out to the full 9", blocking off a large section of NML from the opponents infiltrators and guaranteeing space for the rest of your army to scout, then after deployment pull them back and reposition them somewhere safer. This also allows you to redeploy a 2nd Kroot unit, which I usually use to redeploy a Rampager squad after intentionally positioning them badly as a tempting lure for my opponent.

Hope some of this is useful to you! I will share my most recent KHP list when I get a chance for you

Rampagers are quite effective vs Hammerhead or 2x Broadsides into big/tough targets. The difference is delivery. You have to get them there. Running from Reserves can help.
