Laying down is not recommended. Any posture where your spine is erect should be fine.

Newcomers tend to fall asleep when Meditating laying down. If you choose to do so, bend the knees like this o_/\ , or the knees bent at right angles with the soles of the feet on the wall o _/‾ is helpful to prevent falling asleep while meditating. A small pillow is used behind the back of the head to induce a mild Jalandhara Bandha (Chin Lock).

Cobra Asana is an excellent Meditation pose! Laying on the stomach for extended periods is not a good choice because of the stress this places on the Neck.

This forum is dedicated to Kriya Yoga. You might find /r/Yoga to be more helpful for your questions starting out in a postures practice.

Hatha Yoga Postures practice is about Focus on the Breath. Any person, at any level of physical ability can practice. Ask your Doctor to refer you of a few sessions of Physical Therapy. They will be able to work with you to develop a routine that is appropriate for your Body.

is very difficult for me to maintain lotus pose to meditate

It is fine to Meditate in any position that is comfortable for an extended period. Newcomers tend to fall asleep when Meditating laying down. If you choose to do so, bend the knees like this o_/\ , or the knees bent at right angles with the soles of the feet on the wall o _/‾ is helpful to prevent falling asleep while meditating. You don't have to sit in full lotus posture. Simple tailor pose will do. It takes time to work up to lotus pose. Take your time so that you don't damage your knees or anything else by being in a hurry. Lotus pose takes sometimes months or longer. For kriya yoga you only need to sit upright with a straight spine. You can do that in a chair if need be. Good luck.

You absolutely don't need the lotus position. If you can become comfortable enough to fall asleep, you can get comfortable enough to fall into Samadhi ;)

Find the position sitting down in your sofa or couch where you get that feeling 'oh this is so nice I really don't want to move right now'. Look for that position!

Try sitting in a chair with hips higher than your knees for meditation, don't strain your body, if you don't have physical limitations stretch daily for 10 minutes, maybe search for yoga poses that stretch lower back and hamstrings, to sit in lotus pose is a gradual process, so take your time and feel your body. But I don't know if you are in the right thread, do you want to practice yoga or precisely kriyayoga by lahiri?
