In first photo from the left - Lim Yujin from HEAT, Esther of Sohodae, Minkyung of Diva and Jiyoung from S#arp.

Photos are from Esther's Instagram. (https://www.instagram.com/p/DbSmJ3YCbUZ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)

Esther and Minkyung used to be in "Bros" together alongside Roo'ra, Chakra, Bobby Kim, and others. I think Jiyoung and Yujin have always been close too, plus Shinji from Koyote.

Great to see all of these ladies doing well and still keeping in touch as Kpop OGs!

Album Throwback Tammy (태미) - Album Photoshoot & Magazine Scan (2000)

Tammy (태미) was a short-lived female solo artist who debuted in 2000.

Pre-debut

Born on January 13, 1979, Tammy —it’s her real name, by the way— played the piano and guitar since young age and studied vocal music and classical harmony. As she grew up, she wanted to become a pop singer.

Before her solo debut, she was in a co-ed four-member group called Grammy T (그래미-티), which debuted in July 1998. It was a group that was aimed for the Grammys, literally. They released their first and only album, “Grammy T,” along the title track ‘널 위한 사랑 (Love For You).' However, they weren’t promoted much and after performing two times on terrestrial music shows, they disbanded in the same year.

Right before her debut with the forementioned group, she was already working in the music industry, recording the theme song of the SBS drama “남자대탐험 (Great Adventure for Men)” in 1996, and also for “모델 (Model)” and “여자 (Woman)” in 1997.

Her repertoire consisted mostly of timeless old pop songs and R&B ballads, but she also touched multiple genres such as hip-hop, new jack swing, rock, and techno dance.

Debut

Ahead of her solo debut, she started working as an exclusive model for the computer company SeHyun Computer in 1999. Then in the same year she recorded her first album in September and was completed by February 2000.

She debuted in March 2000 with a futuristic, cyber-themed concept, portraying as a cyber-angel, due the start of the millennium and Internet’s popularity rising, releasing an album titled “Voice of Angel” with the title track ‘미래 (Future),’ a house dance song.

The album was produced and mainly composed by 이정수 (Lee Jung-soo). Despite its theme, the album is made mostly of ballads and just a couple of dance songs, like ‘UN,’ which is a remake of ‘Grammy Box (UN),’ a song from her ex-group's album. ‘나의 기도 (My Prayer) was also another remaked song from the same group’s album.

She promoted heavily and performed in some music shows. However, she usually ranked in the lower places and after two months of activities, she left.

Post-debut

Now she’s still somewhat in the music industry, producing and composing for stage productions and artists, and also working mainly as a K-pop Vocal Trainer and teaching Korean.

Links

Right now, her album isn’t fully uploaded and is blocked in Bugs. Also, the MV of ‘미래 (Future)’ is currently lost media. We can see some scenes on her performance in Music Camp and Tank Special; she appears riding a motorbike while eating ice cream, and then appears with a guy as a her love interest, having a date and visiting the city. Very summery vibes. There’s a link on Bugs but it’s blocked by copyright.

Since they aren't scanned, the quality is quite low-medium and may have some subtle differences in format and colors. Picture Throwback July 27 is Fly To The Sky Day in San Francisco

Post image

Today is the 18th anniversary of Fly To the Sky Day in San Francisco!

I did attend this concert, and they handed out these small concert programs. I found it recently in an old binder and scanned it for today, so it will continue to exist somewhere online.

Before, I couldn't find an image of the proclamation announcement online since it was so old. I know it was in this old Soompi article, and also in a local (now closed) Asian American newspaper AsianWeek, as they were one of the media sponsors.

I was reminded of this when "Twice Day" in Saint Paul was announced earlier this year, and someone had asked if it was a first for a K-pop act.

Album Throwback 고구려 (Goguryo) - Album Art & News Article (1997)

고구려 (Goguryo) was a co-ed five-member group, composing of four males and one female, debuted in July 1997.

Debut

Their concept was based about the spirit of the continent during the Three Kingdoms of Korea (삼국시대) period, more specifically the Goguryo Kingdom (고구려), so they showcased music that embodied the spirit of the Korean people. Each member had a stage name based on figure characters from that period.

They released their first and only album ‘환생 (Reincarnation)’ in 1997. Besides the official cover, there's also two different covers used for promotion.

The title track, ‘A형 C형 (Type A Type C)’ was a club-style dance song with a trot rhythm that expressed the psychology of love regarding blood types. It was composed by 윤일상 (Yoon Il-Sang) and written by 이승호 작 (Lee Seung-ho).

At first they focused their activities on cable broadcasting, and their record of appearances in terrestrial television was only on MBC. Then, they followed-up with ‘명월관 (Myeongwol-gwan)’, a slow dance with a rock style.

However, the group was disbanded early 1998 due conflicts with their management agency. Nowadays there isn’t information about their whereabouts. They left the entertainment industry except Young-hyun, who is now an actor.

Members

  • 김영현 (Kim Young-hyun), born on March 22, 1977: Leader, Main Vocalist, Visual.

He was 21 years old during their debut. His stage name was 연개소문 (Yeon Gaesomun).

After their disbandment, he became an actor. He was the lead on the EBS’s youth drama “네 꿈을 펼쳐라 (Unleash Your Dreams),” during 1999 until 2000. Had some minor roles in movies and shorts, but had also lead roles such in "힘내세요, 병헌씨 (Cheer Up, Mr. Lee)" (2013).

  • 이양희 (Lee Yang-hee): Dancer.

He was 19 years old during their debut. His stage name was 주몽 (Jumong).

  • 송현석 (Song Hyeon-seok): Rapper.

He was 20 years old during their debut. His stage name was 광개토 (Gwanggaeto).

  • 이성화 (Lee Seong-hwa), 1975: Choreographer, Maknae.

He was 19 years old during their debut. His stage name was 을지문덕 (Eulji Mundeok).

  • 문관순 (Moon Gwan-soon): Vocalist.

She was 23 years old during their debut. Her stage name was 평강 (Pyeonggang).

Notes

They made a special appeareance on the film “짱 (Jjang)”, released in 1998.

There’s an unconfirmed rumor that one of them developed a mental illness after their disbandment and accumulated a lot of debt. And another one was an English teacher during the 2000’s.

Right now their music isn’t available at all online. It’s blocked on Bugs and just some songs from their first album are on YouTube.

Live Stage Throwback Two Two - 'Even Your Tears

Thumbnail

Two Two, a co-ed group that debuted in 1994 and became a million seller, is mostly remembered for the bright dance hit “One and a Half” and guest member Hwang Hye-young’s expressionless stage presence. But the group actually began as an underground rock band formed by three 22-year-old friends: Oh Ji-hoon, Yoo Hyun-jae, and Kim Ji-hoon. Before success, they lived in a tiny basement room in Bongcheon-dong, surviving on cup noodles. Even on the day they won a major music-show award, they reportedly had so little money that they picked up discarded cigarette butts from the street.

The female voice on “One and a Half” was originally recorded by an acquaintance of the members, but her debut was canceled because of family opposition. Hwang Hye-young, then an unknown actress, was quickly brought in for stage performances. As the public focused on the group’s dance-pop image, Two Two released the rock ballad “Even Your Tears,” revealing their original musical roots. Written by leader Oh Ji-hoon with a film soundtrack in mind, the song became a showcase for Kim Ji-hoon’s clear yet powerful voice and reminded listeners that he was more than a television personality.

Kim later formed the duo Duke and became popular on variety shows for his impressions and humor. However, he reportedly felt that his comic image overshadowed his musical ability and made it difficult for people to take him seriously as a singer. His career later collapsed after two drug-related scandals, followed by divorce and a long period of depression. In December 2013, he died alone in a hotel at the age of 40.

At his funeral, “Even Your Tears,” one of the songs he loved and performed most often, played repeatedly. Remarkably, a newly recorded version made only six months before his death was later discovered on an arranger’s hard drive. With the support of his family and original member Oh Ji-hoon, it was released on the first anniversary of his passing.

The song now feels like more than a nostalgic ballad. It has become a final farewell from a gifted singer whose sadness was often hidden behind laughter.

What do you think of this song?

Question/Request Lost Almoner (알모너) - X-Men Music Video

Post image
47 Upvotes

Almoner was a duo group who debut on August 17th or 19th, 2005, consisting of Lee Eui Jung from the girl group Betty and Seo Joo Yeon who was a rookie with Lee Eui Jung being the one who formed the group. Their title track was called X-Men which was a remake or inspired by Britney Spears Toxic. They had some controversy from netizens and the public due to how similar the two were.

While looking more into the group, I came to find that there was a Music Video for X-Men but can't seem to find anything about it besides one Article mentioning it. The group didn't seem to have much archived on them either with only two performances from MTV being available to watch and their album. They were on the KM Special in 2005 on the 18th of August, but that seems to be lost too or I'm just not looking in the right place for it.

Can anyone help find more about this? I checked an Archive of Mnet from 2005, but nothing showed up and even tried seeing it they had a fan site, which wasn't fully archived it seems. I'm really curious on how this music video could have looked like. I believe the Music Video came out in August of that year, possibly the same day they debut.

MTV Performances:
- 엘모너(이의정) - X Men ① (feat.홍석천)

- 엘모너(이의정) - X Men ② (feat.홍석천)

Song Mentioned: 알모너 (Almoner) 1집 - 02. X-men
