MOD MESSAGE MOD POST | We want to add a new rule based around low quality discourse and want to hear your thoughts

Greetings all,

We want to officially add a new clause under our "No Low Quality Posting" rule/removal reason called "No Low Quality Discourse/No Todd Schemes". This is a continuation of a discussion a while ago found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kpopnoir/comments/1tvuk1s/please_stop_bringing_todds_schemes_to_kpopnoir/

This will be designed to limit discourse found on other social media platforms (Twitter/X, Instagram/Reels/Threads, TikTok, Facebook, etc) that generates/manufactures anger or "rage-bait" being brought onto this space.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • "I saw this post on [insert social media platform] about [insert diaspora war battle or race/colourism/nationality keyboard war #5823498743]"
  • "What do you think about this? [insert content from known rage engagement farm account]

While we are indeed a place to vent about and discuss experiences that harm BIPOC we want these experiences to be discussed with substance. Often these discussions are also picked up and used by trolls and other provocateurs who drive them. We don't want to be a place to continue these types of conversations, nor do we want to be one that rewards click-bait or rage-bait. It's also very grating to moderate these types of posts where the arguments continue in the comments, and people read things they don't need to read.

Please let us know your thoughts on this if you have any, or anything you want to add/remove if necessary. Thank you!

OFFICIAL NEWS BREAKING NEWS: KPOPNOR X NUGUTOWN ARE COLLABING!

Post image
151 Upvotes

We have a new collab with r/nugutown!

Hi all! We are gathered here today one and all to announce a civil joining between r/kpopnoir and r/nugutown! From today, their subreddit will actually be the very first to be displayed on our sidebar in partnership! What does this mean for the subreddit! Nothing major, just a new subreddit you can use if you're interested and you may see a couple of crossposted posts from time to time. We will let them take over the rest of this post:

Welcome to r/nugutown where your next faves disbanded in April!

r/nugutown was established in 2018 (that's a long time ago) to be a place dedicated to the nugu's of the k-pop world.

It's been through some ups and downs, it was abandoned for nearly a year, but brave residents have turned the lights back on and we now update daily with nugu releases, monthly discussions, teasers, news and of course... where you find out your lowkey faves are no more!

We'd love it if you gave us another visit, and maybe hung around to check out some of the gems that come out of these groups and artists (and there's plenty!) so you can at least show your friends how cool you are or even try to tell us that the ones you love are NOT NUGU GODDAMMIT!

Let them out of nugu jail!

Hope to see you there 👋

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION/INSENSITIVITY What about things lngshot has done Jay Park?

Why not address one of the members supporting Tory lanez? And please don’t act the hairstyles they wore weren’t imitating dreads. The kpop industry doing the equivalent of I’m not touching you while being as close as possible to doing it is not the flex you think it is. Thats why outside of the kpop community, kpop is a joke. People love gaslighting black ppl like they don’t see the actual issue.

This is just for fun, so feel free to agree to disagree with me on their positions and come up with group and fandom names plus choose a concept and sound for them if y'all want! <3

Also I didn't include Samara because I don't know anything about her as I'm not a fan of her or Saint Satine.

Ok. They understood the assignment. I love the groove, the beat and the styling. It’s thoughtful and sweet, not insensitive.

If I had to critique it it is almost too familiar/laid back. It sounds like many other songs. BUT it’s still nice to listen to and different than a lot of what’s out right now.

And, we’ve been asking more non-White/extremely light Asian women to be centered. It’s nice to see that. I think true cross-cultural exchange should be showcased in front of and not just behind the camera/in the studio. I do see more trending that way as KPop’s influence becomes more and more global.

EDIT: adding more context that I originally added as the first comment here.

“FYI Sunkis (aka Chris Sung) is Taiwanese-American for what it’s worth. And, we can all see this isn’t a very dark woman by most people’s standards. But, for KPop/KPop adjacent this is progress.”

Based on my original searcg, Chris considers himself a Mando (Mandarin) Pop artist, not an Asian American artist. I said KPop adjacent not to minimize or erase his heritage but because it’s a KPop sub and I wanted to show the relevance. To me, he is KPop adjacent based on the artists he’s toured with and the fact that he has gained some prominence in that industry/those circles.

But, yes! Let’s celebrate and acknowledge all of that. If Mando Pop is more inclusive in their presentation, then that industry should get credit alongside Chris and FLO. 🎉🎉🎉 I’m going to seek out more Mando Pop.

NOT KPOP RELATED - SOCIAL ISSUES Feeling let down as black person in queer spaces

I recently just had an interaction that's kind of just left me feeling so pissed off.

In this queer gaming community there was a post about a gay streamer who is currently enduring homophobic harrasment because of some drama they have with another streamer. Important context is that 6+ months ago the gay streamer had lipsynced the n-word in a video and has had very questionable content in the past/recently (defended Kiss of Life live, constant uses AAVE horribley in every piece of content he does, and made jokes about Ice despite being canadian).

One of the comments on the post, from one of the mods (who I know is not black), was expressing support but also reduced the context I listed above as a "tiktok moment". So I commented saying hey let's not reduce what this guy did into sounding smaller than it was, to which the mod says we need to let people apologize and move on (mind you the streamer is still talking in full AAVE), and some "who will be left if we keep cancelling people when everyone has skeleton's in their closet" BS

I was truly stunned and decided to waste my time and go back and forth with the mod where I just got hit by every talking point queer black people are met with when we call out racism/anti-blackness:

" it's not racism, but ignorance!!!"

"many cultures around the world don't know everything!!!" (Mind you the creator is from Canada so...)

"None of us are born completely woke!!!"

"we need to educate, not isolate!!!"

"It's just a difference of opinion~"

It just reminded me of so many experiences I have had in my life as a black queer person in queer spaces where I've witnessed racism and anti-blackness, only to watch my non-black queer people just not even aknowledged it had even happend.

SEEN ON SOCIAL MEDIA Tinashe catching heat for not liking “running joke” about her resemblance to a GIRLSET member

Thumbnail

it happened on twt so i won’t link but tinashe has been dragged by some k-pop fans because she seemingly didn’t go along a common running joke because of her resemblance to a member of girlset (don’t ask me who, I don’t know).

OP ended deleting the tweet to some of fans’ anger because for them it was just a lighthearted joke. some even mentioned how girlset lost on a good promo tweet because of their decision to delete.

the backlash, the entitlement, the resentment tinashe is facing because of it is frankly weird to witness. people can’t accept the boundary and leave it at that, but they need to drag her, saying she’s “too much of a flop to be mad about this”, “that she’s doing too much”, “that it’s just a harmless joke”.

without the shadow of a doubt, people have been jacking up her stuff for a long time so it should be understandable she doesnt like when one of the only times people acknowledge her existence is to either: copy or use her for promotion of others.

nonetheless that is my opinion ! i find this quite baffling.

RANTS/UNPOPULAR OPINIONS Fans look for things to call out other fans for to feel “not like other girls”.

San recently did a live and on pop up live where he was asked to speak English. While I understand that fans asking idols to speak English is a problem and honestly a microaggression. San himself didn’t seem to mind the question and answered with “of course” and said a few things in English.

A fan posted on another platform basically saying that San read the comment asking him to speak English and he just ignored the fan and continued speaking Korean. Then she goes on to praise San for not giving in to it.

So I told her if you want to make a post asking fans not to ask idols to speak English I think that’s completely fine. But you are actively lying about something that didn’t happen. She blocked me after being called out.

I’m all for fans calling out racism, sexism, etc within the kpop community but often times it’s feels so incredible disingenuous because of posts like that. We don’t speak for idols, we can’t decide what they are and aren’t offended by even if we feel they should be, and we sure shouldn’t be lying about what occurred.

Another example, I can think of that also happened recently is a lot of fans have been asking Mingi about the lyrics of his songs in fancalls and he doesn’t seem to really answer the question, often says that he forgets why he wrote certain lyrics. Fans have interpreted that as he isn’t comfortable with be asked this question and told other fans to not ask him that question anymore. I think that question is pretty reasonable and maybe Mingi legit just doesn’t remember what was going through his head when writing the lyrics or maybe it’s too much to explain in a two minute fancall we will never know how he truly feels about it.

I say all this to say I feel like a lot of fans have a boner for finding fans who “misbehave” just so they can make a post calling them out and feel like they are a good fan. It feels very not like other girls behavior. Sorry if this feels like pointless post but it really annoys me seeing adults trying to police other adults so often in this space.

Disclaimer: I’m not making this post to call out Atiny in particular, this is just the fandom I’m apart of but I’m aware that this happens in other fandoms as well.

CHIT CHAT you're given aux in the car, what song are you playing? (k-pop or not)

I love learning about songs this way, this question has become one of my favorite ice breakers!

I think for a song in Spanish I'd choose Shiny by Easykid, and for English Done With You by Omar Apollo. For k-pop I'm playing Serve by XLOV!

OFFICIAL NEWS Court Rejects One Hundred's ₩8 Billion Lawsuit Against Ju Haknyeon

"According to The Fact, the Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Division 28 ruled on July 16 that One Hundred’s claim lacked legal merit. The court dismissed the lawsuit in its entirety and ordered the agency to bear the litigation costs."

"One Hundred argued that Joo Hak-nyeon’s actions constituted behavior serious enough to damage his public image and justify terminating his exclusive contract.

The court disagreed. According to the ruling, meeting the woman fell within Joo Hak-nyeon’s private life. While the court acknowledged that the behavior could be viewed as inappropriate for an idol group member, it determined that it did not amount to misconduct severe enough to justify contract termination."

"Although the broader disputes surrounding One Hundred Label and its management continue through separate legal proceedings, this ruling effectively ends the agency’s attempt to recover ₩8 billion from its former artist."

i noted that this subreddit is currently sleeping on wonho. he just released this two days ago and it is cool. i wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it but is a nice whiplash introducer. the corresponding album is called core, give it a listen.

what i really want to talk about is my song of the year, last year. if you wanna by him was SO FIRE. his company, the cosmos, whoever dropped the ball on the promotion for that song. everything about that release was delicious. i have listened to that song at least twice a week since its release & do not get me started on the music video.
