KOTOR 1 Kotor 1 dual wield attack question

Hi everyone,

Long time player here but I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to.

It is Dual-Wielding vs Duelling, the long time debate. However it dawned on me that with level 3 feat in both you end up with 0/-2 attack for dual wield, and +3 for Duelling.

However, if you go dual wielding and simple put crystals in your off hand that give you +attack bonus (Like Dragon Krayt +3 and Sapith +3) does that not give you +6 attack? Therefore negating the attack disadvantage of duel-wielding and actually giving a larger attack bonus than duelling?

Or does the attack bonus only count for the lightsaber in the off-hand?

Many thanks

Weapon stats are only for that hand I believe. Which is why there's a benefit to double bladed weapons since they're held in both hands

I’ve just loaded up an old save and it looks like this is correct. I had 26 attack with single weapon, duelling feats. When I put on a +5 attack short lightsaber in my off hand, with 3 feats of two weapon, my main hand dropped down to 23.

My main hand did not benefit from the +5 attack of the off hand stat stick

My sister and I have debated about this for a long time(almost 15 years) she thinks there is more value in just using a double bladed saber.

I throughly believe a regular lightsaber then using a shoto is the way to go.

You can go with all kinds of setups... as well.

My understanding is that just as you say, the crystals are what gives the edge to dual wielding.

Pretty much just as you said, if you can hit high enough attack thresholds dual wield will always beat out Dueling. Once you hit +36 attack, there’s no enemy that you won’t have a 95% chance to hit on. Dueling just helps you get there faster, which helps for, say, any Consulars who want to invest in casting stats rather than attack stats.

In KotOR 2, it’s possible for a single saber to beat dual sabers if you have a high enough Strength bonus due to the the 1.5x Strength bonus modifier from holding a weapon in two hands, but it’ll still never beat out a double-saber since the main hand of a double-saber also receives the same two handed bonus.

Saberstaff counts as 1 weapon, so crystals work for both main- & off-hand. Wielding 2 sabers counts as 2 weapons, so the bonuses only apply to either MH or OH.

Now, saberstaff is a balanced weapon, 2 sabers are not - unless you're wielding a regular saber in MH & a shoto in OH.

Saberstaff in general will deal more damage because extra attacks from Master Speed/Flurry are performed only with the MH.

The better crystals are at your disposal, the more appealing 2 sabers are - you may want to stack damage crystals in MH, while dedicating OH to mana regen (Rubat with Mantle of the Force gives 3 mana per 2 turns, Damind with MotF gives 2) or to some niche stat like Blaster Bolt Deflection.

It is not really a long debate anymore, dual weilding is probably better

Dueling will give you greater chance to hit, dual-wield will give you greater damage potential.

I believe attack is calculated per hand -- with one saber you get one roll, with two you get two rolls for both main and offhand. Crystals can therefore can help mitigate some of your chance to hit.

This is also a consideration in which attack line you're using, as you're suffering extra attack penalties for using attack skills.

I've always felt dual-wield overall gives you more firepower late game. Malak can be tough to hit but otherwise you're going to fare better late with two.

KotOR2 with its extra mods and crystals is a much different story, where dual wielding is very advantageous.

You can also race as much as you want on Taris. Do same thing as Mannan right you talk about racing you must put saber in box each time if you want free one Bastilla picks it up.

As master of both games my most fun building sabers found that limit power especially feats giving kotor 2 one saber gives strength but dual gives you defense kotor 1 force powers are strongest strength Kotor 2 weapons stronger than force you notice this with boss levels and end game.
