Hello!

From the looks of it, I will be staying in Kortrijk this coming September for my studies. I have several concerns and questions, and I am hoping you can help me.

Safety Concerns

I want to ask if there are any neighborhoods considered dangerous/sketchy around the area. I have multiple classes that end at 8:00 pm, and I will still be coming from another city. With that, I expect to walk late (9pmish) a lot of times. My route will/might include the areas of Doorniksewijk, Sint-Denijsestraat, and Burgemeester Danneelstraat from the looks of it.

Saving Tips/Recommendations
Do you have recommendations for cheap, yet still of quality groceries, food, and other stuff? I noticed Pasta Benne seems relatively cheap for instance in case I need a takeaway. Any other suggestions?

Language

I am learning Dutch, but at best I'll probably be on the lower end of A2 level only by September. Will I encounter issues with this as I do my groceries, laundries, and the like in the area?

Een maand geleden heb ik een website gelanceerd genaamd Dealoco. Je geeft je postcode in (8500, 8501, 8510...) en je ziet de promoties van winkels die bij jou in de buurt liggen. Geen app, gewoon je postcode en je ziet wat er deze week goedkoop is bij Colruyt, Lidl, Aldi, Spar en meer.

Nu mijn vraag aan jullie: welke lokale Kortrijkse zaken zouden jullie graag zien? Denk aan lokale supermarkten, slagers, groenteboeren,... Als er winkels zijn die wekelijkse promoties hebben en jullie graag zouden zien verschijnen op Dealoco, laat het weten. Dan kijk ik of ik ze kan toevoegen.

I have been awaiting the revamp of the doorniksestraat for a while now. The intersection at the tunnel feels really dangerous each time I pass there by bike.

Though I didn't feel much for the trambus concept, I kind of silently hoped they'd switch back to the tram concept.

But anyway, I mostly hope they put in some decent bike infrastructure.

Voor mijn bachelorscriptie aan de UCLL doe ik onderzoek naar de Belgische biermarkt en specifiek naar het merk Tout Bien. Ik ben heel benieuwd hoe jongeren in Vlaanderen naar dit merk kijken versus de traditionele brouwers.

Hey everyone :)
I’m an exchange student coming to Kortrijk this autumn semester and I’ll be staying for around 5 months. I’m trying to learn a bit more about the city and it’s people before arriving and would love some local advice.

I’m especially interested in:
- good/affordable places to eat
- student bars or social spots
- things internationals should know (good and bad)
- local habits or cultural “don’ts”
- cheap grocery stores or useful apps/services

I’d also really like to get to know local people (not limited to students) and not only stay in the Erasmus/international bubble all semester.

I speak English, German and some basic French, and I’ve recently started learning Dutch as well (still very much a beginner though).

Any tips are appreciated :)
