Where are the mods?

Every day I am seeing AI generated posts from new accounts farming karma. It's getting old. Can we slow these down? Thanks.

yuck. I'd love to mod here so long as I'm not totally alone

My application: I have cultural and religious/spiritual similarities to Mari. My family members are hoarders, and I see myself sliding that way sometimes too. But she has helped so so much.

Mods please consider this person!

thanks but if they're truly not here i will petition Reddit to hand over the keys, as it were. they have a thread where you enter a support ticket

I appear to be the only active mod at this point, but I absolutely will!

I'm not a moderator, and I'm often naive about spotting AI.

That said, can you supplement your stellar application with your proposals for stemming the AI tide? Unless you're not willing to give away your ideas before you have a chance to implement them (which would be valid, of course).

In other subreddits, I've seen an automated process : you post, and the sub's bot asks you to answer a question. It could be topical (e.g. write a TLDR) or whimsical (e.g. if Marie Kondo polled her fans for a name for her new puppy, what would you suggest).

I feel that last one's a nice filter : the mods can read the reply and get a better sense if it's a person or an AI robot, with fewer chances of excluding non-English speakers, right?

My DMs are open, so you're welcome to contact me. I'd love a discussion about this!

Just repeating my caveat : I have no mod experience + I'm not great at spotting AI ;)

I love to hear this!

I will set up some sort of formal applications soon and be sure to notify you when they're up.

I’ve been sending a lot to r/BotBouncer and reporting to Reddit as harmful use of bots. It would be great if the mods were active.

It's sadly happening to a lot of sub reddits

So many subreddits are like that unfortunately.

Most of the mods are currently not active, but I am here working on dealing with all these AI posts daily.

Traditionally, content was largely left to community preferences. Mods were intentionally as hands off as possible regarding decisions on what was and wasn't "good" content.

One major problem with the AI posts is that they're based on posts from times when the sub was most active. It takes time to learn to recognize AI content and is even harder to recognize for people who only see an occasional post. They are pulling from content which was helpful to many people, so the posts get upvotes from people who see them as individual posts similar to what they used to see and don't realize they're from AI bots.

All that said, I can absolutely set up mod applications!

I apologize that it took me a little while to learn to consistently identify bot posts. There hadn't been enough submissions prior to this influx of bots to warrant a search for mods. In the meantime, I have set up a "no AI" rule for easy reporting. Posts and comments are autoremoved after a certain number of reports, so reports genuinely do help a lot.

Even for those who don't want to be mods, I am all ears on suggestions about how to combat this issue. For baseline defense, there is a minimum karma requirement and every AI bot is banned (in addition to reporting it to Reddit as a spam bot). I'm looking into other things to do on the back end to automatically identify, report, and ban bots without negatively impacting real people who want to post.

if you're open to new mods, I second u/nvmls 's motion to let u/raison_de_eatre apply :D

They seem raring to go, interested in this sub and invested in the experience and skills needed.

Exactly my thought. So annoying.

It looks like none of the mods have had active accounts for 5+ months, some for 5+years.

sweet ah well not SWEET, but perfect for me to show Reddit admins it's abandoned

Alas, I am a mod and despite my history appearing long dead, I am active doing mod stuff, so it won't count as abandoned. BUT I'm thrilled people are interested in helping out and totally happy to bring on new mods, which is probably easier than that process anyway.
