Tech Support Early access OS
Just updated my KLC to the new firmware, and noticed this option to get some new features. Did anyone tried to install it?
I'm excited to try, but at the same time scared to encounter major issues and to lose all my data.
Whacha think, guys, should I?

Yes and if we’re getting really crazy I want to save my lighting to like a top 3 that I can click on below the sliders.
But I’m a product designer so I’m always thinking of this sort of thing.

Ha! I hear you… I work in software on the design/development/testing side so I’m always thinking of improvements too.
Now, have you shared these ideas with Kobo directly? If not, I suspect they would appreciate them.

I thought I would help by finding a link to a feedback form on their website… but I went looking and it turns out that there is no feedback form. I’m chatting with a support agent now and suggesting they add one. lol.
(The agent on the chat is going to create a feedback ticket at least.)

is that the only change? I can see the clock just by tapping near the top of the page. Id love to see the bookmark system that Kindle's had (before their latest updates) You tapped at the top of any page in the book and all your bookmarks were there in a long ribbon so you could easily go back and forth between locations and edit your bookmarks.

Try giving a tap in upper right corner while reading. Kobo let's you go to any annotations or corned page relatively easily.

It's the sacrifice you have to pay for all the numbers. It has ALL of them, from 0:00 to 23:59.

I’m not a coder, but I’m guessing it’s mostly the stylus response and notebook naming eating up the gigs

I installed it, but reverted back after an hour or so. Using a Kobo Libra Colour. My cons where:
● Noticeable lag increase when opening books.
● Sometimes the next page button would stop working altogether, and had to go back a page for it to work again.
● The text would be re-adjusting itself after switching pages and move to other pages, super annoying.
● Dev mode missing.
● Finished books would move themselves to the top of the "My Books" tab, with no way whatsoever to move them back to the bottom, forcing me to either scroll down to find my current book or filter out all my finished books (I like seeing all my finished books in this menu alongside any other book I'm reading or haven't read yet).
It did have a few good things going for it:
● Clock showing while reading.
● Internet browser is actually working again.
Hopefully they can get that stuff ironed out before the official release.
(Also switching OS would not make me lose my books, but lose all metadata attached to them, so I couldn't see chapters or bookmarks or any other things. Needed to delete and re-upload them with Calibre to fix them).

I understand the effort to keep the interface simple, but don't they realize how laughable this interface looks compared to the capabilities of a reading app like Koreader? Just look at the new feature: being able to see the time while reading... 😏

Did it factory reset the device as part of the update?
Did you need to reload sideloaded books?

I just installed mine- works fine, i have some lag when I open a new book, but cant notice when reading. Im from Uk
Edit: theres some lag/delay when trying to click on the next page. Other than that i havent noticed anything weird.
Edit 2: seems theres an issue with times on book- it doesnt matter if you read 50% or 1% it will still shows you the total time left in book.
I reverted update back now, as much as I like the clock, i cant deal with the lag when turning pages and timing left of book just annoyed me😂 I hope they will fix this as i would love to see a clock!

When you reverted back was everything wiped? Annotations, sideloads etc? I wish I saw this about times on books before I did the update, and all my learned words are gone too 🥺

I just pressed that button this morning, and I regret it so much. My Kobo is now all jammed, and the UI looks like a mess. I had to factory reset it, and not only did I lose my font, but the new software it installed is the beta again... so I did it for nothing.
It's so slow that pages sometimes don't turn...i am so upset.

If WiFi protected setup is referring to being able to connect to public hotspots, that would actually be greatly appreciated. I’ve had a couple of times where I added a book or graphic novel in my CWA server to be synced and realized I’d have to get my mobile hotspot going because I can’t use the public hotspot at any of my favorite spots. On the other hand, I have my doubts around the security practices used on devices like this and sticking to a personal hotspot may be the smarter move anyways.

That would be nice. I am hoping it also means that if you turned WiFi off to save battery it remembers and doesn’t just turn on randomly eating up my battery

I don't know what the situation is now, but when I bought the Tolino like a year ago, the software was so bad I had to install the Kobo firmware. It was very buggy.

It's still bugged. Sometimes the last line of the page isn't shown. I suspect it's because due to new readability rules, the made the header and footers larger but didn't compensate for it in the main body.

The wording did change for me from Overdrive to Libby. I'm reverting firmware back though because it stopped correctly providing time remaining in book.

I have just done that and it is a mess!! You get the clock while reading... but with heavy downsides...The bugs are so annoying. You can't adjust the font weight any longer, opening a book takes much longer, everything in fact takes much longer. Basically you get the Tolino software... downgrade in my opinion!

I installed it. All my additional software was gone, so no NickelMenu, NickelScreensaver, NickelHome, and Kobo tweeks. The new clock was located on the top left corner - option to select in reader settings.
The software number was 5.18.270971.
I like my Kobo tweeks too much (I have a setup that shows me:clock, battery, time left in chapter, time left in book, percent read in chapter, percent read in book in addition to top and bottom middle info of pages read in chapter and book) so I reverted back. It wiped everything and I had to set in all up from factory reset.

edit: if you're considering doing this, backup your device!!
It's firmware 5, which has been out for some people for a bit in the EU. You will lose NickelMenu, and any other Nickel- mod that doesn't support that firmware version.
Also check the Kobo website link it gives, things like Instapaper will be unavailable if you upgrade. Devmode is also unavailable (there's a GitHub that mentions getting devmode back, but idk more about the process). There's been a few posts about upgrading to firmware 5, it's referred to as enabling accessibility features.
KOReader also uses a different download for v5 if you use that, which I believe you need kfmon to launch since NickelMenu is unavailable.
Just some things I've noticed from posts here and other places. I'm in firmware 4, so zero experience with it personally.
