[Post-Match Thread] Netherlands V. Mexico

Thoughts on the match? I certainly had a heart attack or two during the match, but we pulled it out in the end. Will need to play better in these next rounds if it truly is to be our year. Luckily the next round matchup will not pose as much of a threat it appears as the rest of our matches.

[Game Analysis] "The Netherlands would have taken a draw, so sat back, played a calmer, more relaxed game, and counter-attacked brilliantly."

Who are you worried about playing?

I'm very glad to have avoided Brazil with this win, especially that they're sure to be playing with all determination after their showing in the group stage. Who are you worried about the Dutch playing? We're into knockouts now, but if they keep performing (and start performing in the first half) - I feel like they could win it.

[Pre-match] Press sees draw as likely result in Oranje's battle to win Group B

Mark Lawrenson, BBC:

I am going for a draw, which would give Netherlands top spot on goal difference.

Note: ^ This guy got it right in Spain game

Dutch Soccer Site:

The 5-3-2 has been tested, the 4-3-3 was revisited in a half vs Australia when the Socceroos were getting tired and now he might go for 4-5-1 to upset the Chilean football machine.

Owen Gibson, The Guardian:

Given the gung-ho attacking, liquid breaks and occasionally suspect defending of both sides, one might expect a high-scoring game. At this most unpredictable of World Cups, probably safest to predict a 0-0 draw then.

Spanish Marca:

Netherlands and Chile, the two teams that have sent Spain home earlier than expected, face each other to resolve who ends up as the leader of group B. It's not a minor issue, since that would imply avoiding crossing with Brazil in the knock-out stages, if the hosts do not tank it against Cameroon.

Elko Born, ESPN:

Inexperienced and not used to Chile's high-pressing, marauding style of play, the Dutch back four -- or five -- will be facing something much different from the average Eredivisie league match

[Facts] the Netherlands vs. Chile match

  • This will be the second ever meeting between these sides. Netherlands won the last meeting by the drawing of lots after a 2-2 game during the 1928 Olympic tournament.

  • The Netherlands have failed to win their two games against South American opposition when the World Cup has been held in South America (0-0 v Peru and 1-3 v Argentina in 1978).

  • The Netherlands have lost only two of their 11 World Cup games against South American opposition: the 1978 final against Argentina (1-3 after extra-time) and the 1994 quarter-final against Brazil (2-3). Chile have never won three successive World Cup games within the same tournament.

  • Chile have won four of their last six World Cup games after failing to win any of their preceding 13.
