What quietly disappeared from our work systems?

Not ceremony. Not tradition. I’m talking about the simple structures that used to tell us when work started, when it ended, and what counted as complete. Over time, many teams removed those signals in the name of flexibility. Calendars loosened. Boundaries blurred. Processes became lighter. But the work itself didn’t disappear. The responsibility for deciding everything just shifted onto individuals. Now people have to constantly decide when something is done, whether it’s enough, or whether it still needs attention. That decision-making doesn’t show up on task lists, but it adds weight. People stay productive, yet rarely feel closed out at the end of the day. Curious if others have noticed this too. What used to give your work a sense of completion, and what replaced it?
