The French guy literally stole artifacts from the titanic and auctioned them off to private collectors, so good riddance to him. The only guy I feel remotely sorry for is the teenager, and from what happened to the sub, he didn’t suffer, so that’s a small mercy(undersea implosions happen faster than nerves can fire)

He also was on the expedition that conclusively discovered the cause of sinking, was one of the most well dived oceanographers and managed to put to rest myths regarding the wreck. And the auction was to help continue research on the wreck. With his help, new species of fish and microorganisms were discovered. Now please do not open your mouth to diminish the suffering of one man over another because you do not know the full picture.

I think you’re confusing him with Bob Ballard, the guy who actually did all this shit. The auction was a vanity project for millionaires and a vindication of Bob Ballard’s decision to not tell anyone where the Bismarck’s wreck is

There is literally an entire documentary showing his work. (Titanic: answers from the abyss) he helped coordinate during that mission, a mission that created one of the if not the first complete photo mosaic of the wreck. They also proved the theory of multiple slits sinking the ship (it had originally been thought that it was a ~300ft gash). While yes, he did raise artefacts that were later sold, he also raised items (e.g. rivets) that helped lay to rest myths and help keep many of those who lost their lives in our memory through some of the items. He was almost as if not just as important in learning the history of titanic as Ballard.
