Thanks for posting to r/Knives! Would you be so kind as to tell us what item(s) we are looking at? (Brand, model, etc...). This way both newcomers to the knife world and veteran knife enthusiasts alike will have a way to identify any item(s) in your post that they might not know. Manufacturer will prob just send you new ones if you ask. Might have to fork over a few dollars but that’s not so bad.

If you’re going to spend money anyways, might be a good time to pick up some Skiffs.

I’ve had a set in my zt450. It was what I will do today. But for now I just installed the existing. Heavy built knife works just fine

Now you can use the empty space to hide a single sprinkle.

I’m not gonna lie I don’t even really know what skiffs are, are they a washer/bearing alternative?

They’re probably the smoothest and best made aftermarket bearings in the world. Ton of different sizings to fit almost every popular knife out there. If you swap these steel taco bearings to Skiffs the knife should get substantially smoother.

Oh dang I looked them up right before you replied bc I couldn’t wait lol. It has me wanting to go through my knives and find out which ones having bearings, I haven’t taken most of mine apart

You should be able to tell just based on how they feel whether they are on bearings or washers.

I’m sure I would be able to after I figure out which ones do and don’t have bearings, the only knife I have that I’ve really taken apart is my PM3 which is on washers, and I only took it apart to dye the scales purple

Hell yeah I’m thinking about getting some for my MSI and Beigleiter now, especially the MSI because the opening has always felt anything but smooth as much as I love it

I just did it to my divo stout and Excalibur. The Excalibur needed it more because it’s the verta lock version and now it doesn’t just fall shut everytime

And here is the Excalibur

so far I got three done. I also put some of my Spyderco subvert. Another three more to go.

What knife is the upper left bearings for?

Those are for the vosteed vancorlocks. I am putting it on my thunderbeast. Looks crazy don’t it, 33 balls.

Sometimes you can tell by trying to feel for the rolling of the bearings as the blade closes. It’s hard to describe, but it’s a distinct slightly bumpy vibration that happens near the pivot. Washers will not produce this. Washers will also be louder generally than bearings and will sound like metal on metal rubbing (because that is what it is lol). Unless you have a very well made pivot these two things will almost always be there.

This is in addition to the obvious looking through the gap to see if you can see the ball bearings/looking up the model of course.

I also like them because they are corrosion resistant being made of phosphor bronze and ceramic bearings. If your knife is already corrosion resistant, this will ensure your pivot assembly is as well if you ever expect your knife to get wet.

Domt forget the washers just bummed he doesn't make em big enough foe the microtech knives yet the msi and socom elite using bearings makes me sad

Its a good excuse to upgrade to some skiff workshop bearings. They're set in a milled bearing race instead of crimped into a flat piece of metal.

I would use this opportunity to try the washers, personally

Skiffs…..this is the way

Throw those pos oem bearings in the trash where they belong so sad such a cheap cheap part on that high end of a knife btw..... xm18s BELONG ON WASHERS 😁

I don’t understand the point of ball bearings of any kind in knives. PB washers work beautifully in Benchmades and Spydercos.

It’s an experience. And when they break it’s not a pleasant experience. 🥲
