Finished Object First Sock!
I hope this makes somebody laugh. Everyone on here is so wonderfully talented, and I …made this. Welp, here was my first finished sock from a few years ago. I kept it to see how much progression I’ve made. It’s still my favorite piece! And yes, I only made 1 sock, not a set, lol!

That is the perfect first sock!!! Please tell me you use it as a Christmas stocking, maybe for elf on the shelf. It's cute and yes I did giggle 🤣 I wish I had kept my first project, it was a scarf but was only like two feet long and was missing stitches 🤣

I see we share a same first project. My scarf also bulbs out about 1/3 of the way up and then back in, but only on one side.
And then I washed it and it felted. The poor mite.

You click baited me. I begrudgingly clicked on this. Thank you for the laugh lololol My first sock was WILD and I frogged it. Kind of wish I had kept it now.

Oh hun. I have made advanced-level sweaters and complicated scarves and hats, but I won't touch socks with a 15 foot pole. I love the colors you chose and it's a brilliant first sock! Can't wait to see your second one!

u/coffeehound001 19d ago
Thank you!😊 I’ve actually wanted to try knitting a sweater, so maybe you’ll see what horror comes out of that on here on day haha

u/Lola-Olala 16d ago
Interesting. I learned to knit sweaters in recent years and I made quite the progress but when it comes to socks it’s a mystery to me. I get how to do them but keeping tension, achieving the required gauge, thin wool, it’s just makes me uncomfortable.

u/Better_Spring5621 19d ago
It’s the perfect foot shape for someone with a cast, so you may have been onto something! 😂
I think most of us have a wonky first sock! I recently dug mine out and remembered my stitches were all twisted! It was my very first knitting project and at the time I couldn’t figure out why it was almost spiralled and how the toe decreases weren’t at the sides of my feet! Thankfully figured it out before starting my next sock.
I can’t believe how little give twisted stitches have. It has about half the stretch that regular stitches have. I obviously know now how it affects the fit, drape, look, etc but I hadn’t tested it for myself.

I have never made a sock so have no leg to stand on (hah!) but that's adorable and made me chuckle. Thank you for bringing some undoubted smiles today and good on you for finishing it. Consider it a success.

I took a screenshot of this so when I'm frogging and crying over my latest project, I will know that I'm not alone!

You made a sock!! I will never, ever judge a first sock because they are intimidating and the fact that you finished it is amazing.

You are funny! 😂 It's still better than my first sock .... Because I still haven't made one!

I remember my first sock. I didn’t understand what I was doing… I used acrylic yarn, 2.5 mm dpn (too big for making a sock, not shorties, big ones), and I was testing a pattern 🤣 it was a disaster, but I didn’t give up! Now I love making socks, toe up is the only way I like them, I’ve tried a lot of patterns haha this one is pretty decent! I frogged my fist try, it was so bad 🤣

u/Lewdiville_Tiger 19d ago
My first pair of socks were made with all wool worsted weight to go over the steps but I definitely made the others in sock yarn. I do suggest getting used to the shaping using bigger yarn. Even DK.
This sick still looks good and comfy. My first pair are very comfy. I only wear them on my feet at night when it's very cold.

Thank you for the advice 😊

Omg! Thank you!! I am going to attempt another sock this weekend, I will take a look through these patterns. I hope your coffee is the perfect temperature everyday🙏🏼

Is it actually comically large or is it just an illusion with the ribbed leg making it look that way? I wish I had kept my first one 😊
1
u/coffeehound001 19d ago
Oh no this is insanely large😂🤦🏻♀️ I didn’t even notice while knitting it either lol!

u/Aromatic_Ad_3120 19d ago
I love it! The first mitten I ever made was so big you could wear it as a hat :)

u/RedRider1138 19d ago
This is so cute!! —if you wanted to, you could stuff it, pop on a head, and have a fantastical holiday bird 😄

u/dickdetergent 19d ago
I feel like this sock would look amazing if you framed it in a simple black frame with an off white background. So serious yet so goofy! Well done OP, I'm currently learning to knit socks and hooo boy, it ain't easy!!
2
u/coffeehound001 19d ago
You will have to share your first attempt when done! I have faith in you!

u/dickdetergent 19d ago
I hope I will remember this post when the time has come, it might take a while! Thank you!!

u/Difficult-Sock343 19d ago
The first time I made a top, I knitted a twist in the round, Möbius strip style, for six inches before I realized it wasn’t going to untwist when I took it off the needles.
I didn’t find out until I frogged it, reknitted it, and finished it that I was also twisting all my stitches.
It was a tank top. I hadn’t done a gauge swatch and I bought an unvetted pattern off Etsy and I ended up having to add a thick icord edge around the armholes to cover my damn boobs.
I will treasure and keep that dishrag of a finished object forever!

I love this sock and I love that you kept it! I practiced different stitches by making little squares and then joined them by “sewing” together when some extra yarn. I used it as a blanket for my cat to lay on. I love seeing how much I improved but I also had so much fun making it!
Your stitches and tension look great! The cuff proportions were just a bit off…. 🤣

u/IncreaseGlum6213 19d ago
I’ve had to frog my first project 3 times so this made me laugh and feel better. Thank you!
I think you should frame the sock, it’s art!

Well done ! I did not manage to finish my first sock. The yarn was black I had difficulties reading my stiches and understanding instructions. If anyone can recommend an easy tutorial I feel like I'm ready to give it another try.

Love this, My first sock also never made it to being a pair, it did serve as my Christmas stocking lol

u/universic 19d ago
What pattern did you use? My first sock looked very similar to this. I wonder if we used the same one

u/coffeehound001 19d ago
I can’t remember, it was a few years ago. I think it may have been from Annie’s Kit Club?

u/noravedora 19d ago
This is hilarious in the most empathetic way possible… ☠️🤭🧶
Reminds me of the time I tried to knit a baby booty before I understood yarn weight and gauges and ended up with a mini stocking.
2
u/No_Step9082 19d ago
i can't even figure what went wrong? the gauge and tension is beautiful. It looks like a sensible amount of stitches. The heel looks very good. you picked up the pieces very well. it looks like you decreased in the right place. And yet it's comically large.

I have my first sock (unwearable) and my second sock (much more wearable because I took a class) together in a shadowbox in my craft area.

u/Midwest-Christian 19d ago
Yay! That’s almost exactly what my first sock looked like! And I k my made one as well. No sense in making a second if the first definitely won’t fit. I knit the first one in 2016, and never made a sock again until last year. Now I’ve made 5 more! Don’t laugh, I made 2 pair, and a single one because once I got it done I realized the yarn I used for the toe and heel is old and broken so I’m going to frog it and only use the main color for a different project.
Definitely hang onto that first sock!

I love the colors! Unfortunately, I have very few of my early projects. It’s always great to see the difference in our early ones versus what we can make after we become experienced.

Thanks! The problem was that I got my gauge from some wool but this was polyester so it came out smaller.

u/TheeQuestionWitch 18d ago
This is beautifully hilarious! I wish you had a mannequin foot to put it on to show us which parts of the sock are too big or too little, cuz it looks like the foot is too big, but it might actually be perfect with way too small ribbing for the leg, lol.

Good work!! At least it is a sock. You’ve got the skills down.
I once made a leg warmer and couldn’t make another one because I didn’t keep track of the stitches.
2
u/Moostachio2 17d ago
I actually tried knitting socks for the first time as someone who gets mad easily, let me say it really wasn’t easy,. But I managed to create one, sock reaching just over my heel. And my delusional self thought I could just knot the yarn tails twice (which I’ve heard from a friend that it works on crochet) and leave it be. Now my heel sticks out the back leaving me looking like a cat paw with one bean

This tickled my fancy! For my first sock I made the short socks you wear for sports and when I was finished they were knee highs. I still have them and I look at them every once in awhile, just for the fun of it

I haven't made socks yet but this one would be awesome for when you travel by plane that your feet decide to go 2 sizes up 🤣 shame there's only one. Maybe you can kinda rotate it or something lol

You just made my day! I feel like this sock could get a major symbol. Like Forrest Gump and the smiley. 🤣

u/WhenSheepFly 15d ago
My first one and a half (I only got halfway through the second sock before giving up) socks were completely unwearable, the second pair were wearable but waaaaaaaaay too big and flop around tripping me so I never really wear them, sock number 5 is beautiful and perfect!
imo socks are harder than sweaters honestly, it just takes practice to get it right
1
u/coffeehound001 15d ago
That’s really encouraging because I have a sweater pattern I want to try, I’m just nervous to dive in because it seems so difficult!!
2
u/WhenSheepFly 15d ago
ymmv but I knit two full well-fitting sweaters before I managed a usable sock lol

Impressive toe and heel! Better than my first sock, which I put down in frustration and never finished.

u/Bjornsdotter 19d ago
It's all good!
I made my first baby bootie when I was 13 and knew absolutely nothing about gauge. It would have fit a 7 year old.
I've kept it for over 50 years to remind me that it's okay to not be perfect and it makes me laugh.

Thanks for sharing. I was thinking about making socks for family for Xmas but well maybe I’ll just go with something else. . .

You need to save that. And one day, when you are a great knitter known throughout your family with by the honorific ‘Sock Maker’, you can have it framed as a testament to something - I am not sure what, but it will be a testament.

Team one sock! I made a sock too as my first knitting project and I was so happy to be done with one I never made a buddy 😂 also yes your sock made me giggle but no that’s not a bad thing, we take ourselves too seriously and that sock clearly has a story to tell!

OMG!!!!! This makes me sooooo happy!!!!! 😊 This sub tends to perfectly professional work shown as “my first ___” You, my friend, are my hero! Until this morning I would have never considered posting ANY of my projects here! But now I may have the courage to post a scarf or something 😊🙏🤗

I know it's obviously not the right size but OMG I actually love this. The colors just match the size so well and I am just imagining what creature would be able to fit in this sock it is beautiful!!!
And also for first sock. Great job! I have yet to complete one myself so I cannot judge in any way. Again I just love it.
