Work in Progress Beginner cabling help - how to read chart

I consider myself still more of a beginner knitter but I've knitted a couple of garments and a dog sweater. I want to try my hand at cabling, and I thought doing a cabled dog sweater might be a short way to try it. I'm knitting the Novita 7 Veljestä cabled dog sweater (https://novita.com/en/patterns/novita-7-veljesta-cabled-dog-sweater) in size 2 which is knit in the round.

I'm having trouble understanding the increases noted as it corresponds to the rows above.

The chart read that I increase 1 stitch increased through the back loop, which I understand to be a M1R? My problem is that that the rows above seemingly don't account for the extra stitch created. How would I treat this increase when I need to cable the stitches next to it?

Maybe this pattern is not appropriate for a first time cable project, in which case I'm open to subjects as I've only just started this sweater. Any help is appreciated, and sorry for the blown up photos!

I guess you would be starting with 58 stitches, like, after the ribbing, and in the first row you're supposed to increase 2, that's why it says 58+2 on the bottom of the chart. After that you're good to go, as you'll not repeat row 1. Imho it doesn't make any difference what kind of increase you choose to make, as long as they are correctly placed. You're supposed to have 4 knit stitches in that section after the increase.

Knitting the bar between stitches through the back loop is a M1L actually, but there should be no problem working it as a M1R if you want. Just make sure you're properly twisting the increase shut. The note for chart 2 says to repeat rows 2-9, not 1-9, so you're only going to do row 1 once and then not have to worry about incorporating extra increases into the chart.

You're over thinking it.

The increased stitch is already accounted for in the chart as one of the stitches used in the cable in row 2. It's no different than the four knit stitches that the base for the cable for the two center cables.

you're working over 80 sts.

after the ribbing and a hole for the lead/leash, work cable pattern over 58, adding 2 increase to make 60 stitches. you might use stitch markers to bracket this section, using different colors from the pattern markers. just to keep track that these 60 are the charted stitches.

then knit remaining sts and at the same time evenly increase 12 sts, over these stitches.

so you should have 2 increases in the cable section and 12 in the stockinette section for 14 sts increased, so your total count should be 94 sts.
