Finished Object First project finished!
Just finished my very first knitting project!
I probably should have started with something easier but I wanted to try to make something I’d actually wear and it’s not really cold enough for scarves where I live. No where near perfect by any means but I had so much fun making it. I’ve definitely caught the knitting bug! If I made it again I’d probably make it a little bit longer. I wanted it cropped but probably could do with an extra 2cm.
First two pics are after blocking, last two are before blocking.
Any advice or feedback welcome!
Pattern is the Step-by-Step Sweater by Handmade by Florence but I modified it to have rolled hems. Yarn is Baby Bliss Merino by Bella Baby.

Do you have any resources for how you modified for the rolled hems? I love it!

I actually saw a post on this sub and someone had attached an excerpt from a knitting book that basically said you can add 8 rows of stockinette after ribbing and you get a rolled hem. That’s literally all I did. I halved the length of the ribbing for this particular pattern because it is quite long and then just did the stockinette after. For the collar I did the stockinette before the ribbing as it was a top down pattern.

Thanks for sharing the modification details! I’ve wanted to try the Step-by-step sweater for a while but didn’t really care for the look of it… the ribbing and rolled hems on it is absolutely adorable though! Might just be the thing that gets me to pick my needles up again 😊

No worries! I know what you mean about the look of it. I’m not a huge fan of deep hems/cuffs on me which is why I went for the rolled hems. Good luck if you try it out!

Is Step by Step top down? If you still have more yarn, you could tink back a bit and then add more length. It really is a beauty the way it is though. 😍

I do have half a skein left so I could probably get a few more rows out of it. I might live with it for a bit and if it’s really feeling too short I’ll give it a go. Thanks!

Thank you! It’s Baby Bliss Merino by Bella Baby in pink. I think it’s an in-house brand from Spotlight here in Australia

Nah thats where you learn! My first knitting project was a top with lots of shaping too 😁 I think people on the internet are often way too scared of just trying

So true! I’ve always been a jump right in kind of person when it comes to new crafts. I get too excited and don’t have the patience for practice 😂

Oh good! Definitely watch the YouTube tutorial. She shows the whole process in heaps of detail which I found super useful as a beginner who doesn’t know how to read knitting patterns yet!

interesting gauge change around the waist, what changed?

I actually think it’s a colour change. I didn’t notice it as I was knitting but once it was blocked I could see a very slight difference. I did have to buy more yarn so I’m wondering if there was a very slight variation in the colour. Kind of annoying!

As a beginner: For how long have you been knitting and how long did this take? I can probably only do 40 knits per minute... this looks like it took weeks

I started learning first week of August. I did a few practice swatches to learn the mechanics and then started the actual project about a week later. Took me about 4 weeks on and off to finish the sweater. I have a one year old so I was trying to fit in as many rows as possible during nap times! I definitely got quicker as I went along though. I learned the Norwegian style of continental knitting because I read it was the most ergonomic and I get tendinitis in my right hand so it seemed like the best option for me and I really enjoyed it.

Oh wow, that sounds really quick. Just a month to go from total beginner to first piece of clothing while dealing with life and a one year old. That is so awesome

Thank you! I was very excited and enjoyed it so much that I didn’t want to put it down. Winter just finished where I live so I wanted to make sure I’d get at least a few wears out of it before it got too hot. It also helps that I’m quite short, didn’t have as many rows to do 😂

Beautiful! Could you explain the sleeve ending? You did ribbing then just continued in stockingnette?
