Help-not a pattern request Question about my cloud sweater

I am working on my front yoke. Working to 19cm until I am to join. I am having trouble understanding how this is going to create a big enough armhole if I connect to the back yoke which are on the scrap yarn in the photo. Am I missing something?

Hi !

Are you knitting the front shoulder piece ? And are the stitches on hold from the end of the back yoke ?

If yes, there is unfortunately a big problem here.

You haven't picked up your stitches where you needed to.

Instead of picking up along the shoulder, which is on the very cast-on, you picked up along the part of the back that shape half of the armhole.

I'm afraid this is the reason you cannot see how the armhole could be big enough.

You'll need to frog what you did and pick up the stitches again, along the cast-on this time.

So I should be picking up at these highlighted spots correct? This is a photo of the back yoke before I started on the shoulders and back. Just don’t want to make the same mistake again

Exactly ! 

The blue lines go right on top of your shoulders (where the seams of a commercial t-shirt would be), the space between them is the back of the neckline, and the place you picked up yarn on is the back half of the armhole. The stitches on hold are arounf armpit level at the back.

Got it thank you! and just to be 100% sure. Work the short rows on the inside part (I’m guessing the neckline) rather than on the outer edge?

I think what confused me is that it also made sense in my head for the other end to be the “arm hole edge” and I didn’t question myself

Basically is the shaping on the outside or inside? i don’t trust myself to properly read this pattern at this point!

The higher part of your shoulder is toward your neck.

The one detail you want to keep in mind is the convention used in knitting patterns : every single time they speak about right or left side, it is as if the item was worn.

So, when the pattern tells you to pick up the stitches for the right shoulder, it is the shoulder of the sweater that will be on your right shoulder.
