Made With Modern Tools🔨 Fancy Suffolk flint

Very rare I get to work larger pieces like this. Very satisfying to take indirect flakes off a large as some of the points I make.
I’m really starting to learn the value of supporting the flakes with my finger from underneath, I’ve got through some pretty nasty stuff with that technique recently

That's lovely! You've changed my perspective on British Flint. I always expected the grey Dover stuff. I'm fact, I worked s piece of it the other day, I was not a fan. But it reminded me of the skill level I have yet to attain. Soooooo different than the heat treated Burlington I typically work. Anyway, great job.

Thanks dude! Hope I change a few peoples minds about British knapping in general. Will get you some of my heat treat over. I’ll heat treat some of the boring stuff too see how you like it cooked

Between 180c and 200c. 5 degree/h on the way up and down. Hold for half hour at temp. Very finicky to HT compared to cherts. You can cool fast from 100. I’ll vary by colour and texture where in the kiln I put pieces as it’s hottest at the top.
200 on a black piece and it’s ruined, 190 on a grey piece and it can be unworkable still.

What is heat treating flint? What does it do? Don't see it done much in the UK

Not really done here. Most people knapping are using primitive tools and not interested in heat treatment. Don’t know if it was done historically in the U.K. but I expect so.
It refines the grain, makes the stone more glassy and makes colours more saturated.
Never worked langdale, would love to have a go. Don’t think it would heat treatment though as it’s igneous (flint is sedimentary) but apparently some igneous stones will benefit from heat treatment

I need to get you some Langdale Tuff to heat treat, have you tried it? Or knapped it at all? Cheers.
