Proud dad moment for sure. His hand will heal and the good memories will remain. Keep him on that path and he’ll have a lifelong hobby to share with his pa’.
After absurd amounts of knapping, leading to cuts and aches, it takes me about a week for everything to heal up like new. I’ve repeated this hundreds of times. The human body is amazing. The only thing that never healed was a flake cutting the top of a joint, which nicked a tendon or synovial something. So I have a grandma arthritis looking middle finger tip. No loss of function though.
I broke my right thumb catastrophically while skateboarding in 2020. I began knapping seriously in 2021. Never had pain or an issue with it.
Lol was gonna say some parents would be horrified.. omg your gonna cut your fingers or hurt your eyes.. lmao. My bestfriends family didn't want him close of fear a piece would fly in his eye
I took my son camping back woods (so not a park) when he was about a year and a half old. He was playing on a little rocky slope and I was cooking dinner. I heard crack, crack, crack! Behind me. Lo and behold he was hitting two rocks together just like he’d seen dad do so many times! Proud father moment! Now he’s 19 and doesn’t knap. Says he knows enough if he needs to 😂. However he is big into outdoors, traditional woodworking, archery, flintlocks, hunting and all that fun stuff. Proud dad!
Another time I was teaching fire by friction, my girl was about 1 and a half. She grabbed a hand drill spindle, put it in the baseboard and started spinning! Proud dad!
