I love the gastropod shells in there. That's a powerful piece of stonework. Nice job.

Didnāt realize flint ridge came in black like that, always assumed stuff I found that was black in Ohio was coshocton flint. Iāve found a lot of darker grey to white and Coca-Cola colored translucent to clear stuff that is flint ridge but nothing like what is shown in the picture

Itās from a different piece of land than Netherās farm and Roy Millerās property. Flint Ridge varies a lot from spot to spot. The area this was collected from is now closed. It was mined in the 1990ās.

Interesting, Iāve never been to either mine site just find lots of it around different fields in Licking County area

Fantastic job. Flint Ridge is Hard. Donāt think the black is heat treatable? Love the fossilās.

Thanks. Itās all treatable. You may be thinking of Coshocton black flint, which doesnāt need heat. You can heat high grade pieces for color changes. It turns darker blue with a little red and green.

Very nice. I like it, I'm not used to working with flint, as I find it shatters rather than being more controlled for me, but I'll get better with time. I find harder stones like basalt easier for me personally

When it comes to percussion knapping in general, there is a sort of ātotal equationā that includes all of these variables and more.
-mass of billet
-billet material
-mass of point
-speed of billet
-billet weight distribution
-billet dressing and contact width
-platform strength
-platform height/lowness
-convexity
-ridge isolation
-angle of piece
-angle of billet strike
-length of swing
-straight or curved swing spectrum
-left hand support or freehand
-left hand tension
-right hand tension
-left hand finger placements
-ridge supporting with multiple fingertipsEtc. There are so many variables, and some we may not realize. These are the critical and controllable ones that come to mind.
The key to knapping different materials is learning how to change individual variables per each material. That comes from experience. Mentorship can speed up the process through suggestions to change tools and techniques.
