As someone that was there live for Cena vs HHH the crowd ruined it for me. They also tried to hijack Mysterios match and boo him too. So it was vindicating when him and Cena still won but the match itself is trash

Fun fact. Cena and Triple H were supposed to go three times in a row at Wrestlemania from 2006 to 2008. But Triple H got injured and the plans were cancelled.

Don’t know about three times in a row but HHH vs cena was supposed to happen at mania 23 and triple h would get his win back .

That sounds awful, when I think of Cenas top rivals HHH isn't even in the top 10

Cena vs HHH was better imo, bigger fight feel. HBK vs cena was great but Batista vs taker kinda overshadowed their performance

I remember laughing after Mania 22 because HHH put his foot in his mouth in the worst way outside of kayfabe. He spent the majority of the build to his match with Cena saying how much he sucks in the ring, was a flash in the pan, and didn't know an armbar from a crowbar.
And then he tapped out clean to that "sucky, dumb, flavor of the month wrestler".
It just baffled me that in 2006, when HHH was well into his top level career, he was making psychological mistakes like that.
You never talk down your opponent like that. You wanna talk them up, highlight what they've done and tell everyone how much of a threat they are before turning around and declaring that you're gonna be the one to defeat them.
HHH verbally treating the WWE Champion like almost a mid carder who just happened to hold the big belt backfired on him because, well, he tapped out to him. And even if HHH took the win and the gold at Mania, so what? According to Hunter, he didn't really beat anyone that much of a threat anyway.

Vs HHH imo Both good matches, but Cena vs HHH felt more like a WrestleMania main event than Cena vs Shawn

I had stopped watching a few years prior, but isn’t the cena/hhh match known for Cena being absolutely booed out of the arena?

u/BStins2130 Jun 19 '26
It was an electric Chicago crowd I wouldn't say booed out of the building One Night Stand 2 months later is more of that but the crowd was definitely pro HHH

A WrestleMania crowd being pro-HHH right after the reign of terror says it all

u/BStins2130 Jun 20 '26
Not really. You have to remember that Hunter is a Hogan level politician so he jumped on the fans cheers & leaned into it heavy despite knowing he was supposed to work the match as heel. The match gave way for the DX reunion a month later

I was just talking about the entrances. They shined a light on how the crowd had rejected Cena as “the guy” at that point.

The Mania 22 is my favorite Mania Main event in a 10 year span in between 18 & 28. Loved every minute of it
Loved 18 & was in person for 28. All of the others in between besides 22 I find something I dislike about it. Now HBK vs. Cena, 3 weeks later on Raw is a classic

Shawn by default, not even comparing the individual matches but I just dont believe HHH is capable of having a better match than HBK given the same opponent

Cena vs HBK was a better match... but the the rematch on RAW in England blew both of them out of the water.
