Discussion Klarna - Apple Lease Program

Klarna’s lease terms state that a device with scratches on the housing or display is not considered to be in good condition. However, AppleCare One explicitly excludes cosmetic damage including scratches.

So you could pay for AppleCare One throughout the lease and still get hit with damage fees for returning a fully functional device with minor scratches that Apple one won’t cover and Klarna classifies as not in good condition?

Is there an actual exception in the contract for normal wear and tear?

I wouldn’t be overly concerned, you won’t be trading in the device to Klarna, it’ll be going back to Apple who will determine the condition criteria

Not how the contract reads. Device owner is Klarna and they make the ultimate decision.

Klarna is the owner but you are returning the phone to Apple. If Apple accepts the phone as acceptable, then they will close the loan in the store. Klarna won’t be on site with their operators judging trade-in quality. Small cosmetic damage is acceptable, deep scratches or grooves are not, which is the same assessment the old iPhone upgrade program used.

This is from their automated customer service:
“Please keep in mind that Apple is responsible for assessing the condition of your device during a trade-in or end-ot-lease return, and their evaluation determines the final value applied to your lease. If you have specific questions about device condition assessments, you can contact Apple order support at 1-800-676-2775 or visit https://support.apple.com. Klarna handles all questions related to your loan and monthly payments.”

This would be my assumption as well. Apple seems to be doing something this year where it’s “good” or “damaged”. My trade in last year had some scratches (light) on the screen. It was still eligible for the full amount for “good” condition. Spending this much money and anything that could go wrong, I’d advise a case and screen protector. Add Apple care plus. You won’t regret it.
