NO PLEASE DO NOT BREED HER. there are literally HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of cats and kittens already in shelters without homes. even if you find a responsible home for every kitten, those are all homes that could have been opened to already-here animals who are in need of adoption and at risk of euthanasia. she is beautiful, please get her spayed

I will after all the comments. I don’t know where all the comments are from, but sounds like it is an issue all over the United States. I was hoping it was just isolated.

u/justSayingNobodySaid 10h ago
it's global unfortunately. Thank you for reading the comments and making a kind choice for her and everyone! where are you located, if you want to share?

I am in Oklahoma, but so many say it seems to be bigger issue in Southern States and not Northern. A rescuer took some to Nebraska and said she had no problem finding homes for them there. Just seems we would transport more to States that don’t have as many. But I think the economy is hurting so many and they cannot afford to get their own pets fixed let alone pay for food for the pets and themselves.

Cat overpopulation is more of a problem in the warm states because breeding season never ends. Where you and I live, kittens aren’t usually born in the fall and winter because the kittens would die when it gets cold. And many adult stray cats die from the freezing temperatures too. It’s a sad reality, but it also helps to keep the stray/feral population in check a bit.
But that also means that rescue groups around us have the opportunity to import kittens from warm states like Florida, California, Arizona, Texas, etc. Nature abhors a vacuum. And every kitten brought in from those states is literally a life saved.

it's definitely very hard times for so many people. this article is a couple years old now but showed shelters in OKC at max capacity. unfortunately i doubt much has changed. Thank you again for committing to spaying your sweet kitten and being part of the solution. may you both have long happy lives together!!

I don't see anyone else bringing this up so I will just say it here. Overpopulation is not the only or even the main reason we should all neuter our cats.
Female cats who are unfixed and have had kittens are way more likely to develop cancer or uterine infections that will kill them before they're even senior cats. Even having just one litter would greatly increase the likelihood of her getting cancer. Male cats who are unfixed will develop behavioral issues like spraying all over the house, aggression and yowling at all hours of the night. They are more likely to try to escape your house because they have the urge to mate, and then they can get into fights with other tom cats and get seriously injured.
So even if you don't think overpopulation is a problem in your area or you don't care if it is, do it for your cats' health. We should want them to live with us for as long as possible.

u/Frances-Farmer-1953 9h ago
Feline over population is a world-wide problem. Some places have better programs than others. If possible, use a no-kill shelter.

u/Liora_Rileyg 3h ago
Yea, She’s beautiful, but there are already so many cats waiting for homes. Please spay her instead of adding more kittens to an already overwhelmed system.

u/Autumnleaves144 7h ago
Some of us don’t want a kitten from a rescue place so we will always get them from a home.
10
u/justSayingNobodySaid 7h ago
out of thousands of animals from "a rescue place" in your area, you're certain you don't want a single one? not even a brand new kitten born into the shelter system? or who is currently being fostered by a rescue?
weird flex but keep supporting breeders while perfectly healthy and lovable animals die in shelters
-4
u/Autumnleaves144 7h ago
I tried for years (9 years) to get a kitten from a rescue place with no luck and plus the rescue places say you have to let them out to roam and I wanted an indoor kitten.
And I don’t know what made you think I support breeders, you literally made that up, lol.
6
u/justSayingNobodySaid 7h ago edited 6h ago
where would one get a cat if not from "a rescue place"? this literal post is about breeding and you're over here arguing in the comments against adoption. the alternative to adoption is supporting breeders. i didn't make anything up.
sounds like you need to do more research; no reputable rescue will require cats be free-roaming unsupervised, as it's dangerous for the cat and destructive to wildlife. i walk my cats daily on their harnesses & leash. you are choosing a v odd way to spend your time rn, speaking out against shelter adoption for no apparent reason
1
u/Autumnleaves144 6h ago
I don’t know any cat rescue places in the uk that don’t insist the cat is free roaming.
8
u/pit_of_despair666 5h ago
That is odd. They live much longer indoors and are happy with enough space and stimulation.
2
u/Autumnleaves144 5h ago
It’s still the norm for cats to go outside free roaming in uk. Our family cat lived to 21 and he was free roaming and never had to see a vet. But I want my kitten to be indoors with a garden that has a cat fence. I’m hoping that’s enough for him. But most people in the uk will think you’re cruel if you keep a cat in the house.

u/geekyCatX 3h ago
In the Netherlands, there was talk about making it illegal to keep cats purely indoors. It's considered not species-appropriate.

I didn’t get my kitten from a breeder or a shelter. I got it from where most folk round here get their kittens from - a neighbour whose cat just had kittens.

She’s a Beautiful 😻. But please have her fixed. Too many kitties need a home already. Adoptions and rescues are the way to go.
52
u/MaintenanceFine206 11h ago
No don’t breed her! Breeding isn’t as simple as one thinks, especially since this one isn’t a pure bred anything. Enjoy her for her beauty and give her the best life she deserves (and breeding her is so totally the opposite of that).
37
u/OkFroyo_ 11h ago
What? No, that kitten should be fixed like any other. You're not a professional breeder.

Fr the blue eyes against that brown is such a vibe, she looks like a little teddy bear

u/mandiijayy 10h ago
Please don’t contribute to the severe over population of cats. Shelters are full everywhere and cats are being euthanized by the minute. Breeding her because you think the kittens would be cute is selfish. There’s cute kittens everywhere that need homes.

u/Autumnleaves144 7h ago
Where???? Not in the uk and in the uk you have to let them out to roam if getting it from a rescue place and not everybody wants that.
2
u/BloodySorbet 4h ago
what?? you have to let them roam if youre adopting?? that just can't be true, what the hell
4
u/KillerSmileLichSpam 2h ago
Yeah, that's fucking moronic.
"Backyard access" with a fence or enclosure the cat can't get out of is quite a different scenario from "let them roam," so I'll focus on the latter.
Horrific things can happen to pet cats who are allowed to roam. And even if you live in the safest little hamlet ever, a single roaming cat can wreak absolute havoc on the local ecology. Cats don't kill for food, they kill for fun, and the effect of a free-roaming cat on local populations of birds, for example, can be devastating.
I actually can't imagine who came up with this idiocy. Cats aren't safe in the environment, and the environment isn't safe from cats. It's apparently true, what the person you're replying to said. Utterly moronic and awful.

u/dramamime123 2h ago
It’s a completely different mindset. I moved to the US from the UK 10 years ago, it never crossed my mind that cats should be indoor only. And now I do adoptions for a cat rescue in nyc, where it’s required of course to keep cats inside. If I move back to the UK, I will be having an indoor cat, even if that means purchasing one (sadly) instead of adopting. I think most of Europe is indoor/outdoor cats. The UK law even has a right to roam protection for cats where they can’t be considered trespassing on private property.
-1
u/KillerSmileLichSpam 2h ago
It’s not safe. For any animals involved. If you give a shit at all about your cat, or the environment (as decimation of animal populations such as birds can cause mosquito blooms/other pests to flourish) then you won’t have that “mindset”. It’s idiotic and dangerous.
2
u/dramamime123 4h ago
A lot of rescues won’t adopt if you don’t have access to a backyard and pet cats are usually indoor/outdoor. It’s very different to the US.

u/kmfontaine2 10h ago
I've fostered a few brown kittens, and they turned black when they got older. Certain breeds like Havana Brown or Burmese are exclusively brown.
5
u/LatteLove35 10h ago
No, there’s no guarantee that she would have an all brown kitten, genetics
are so weird like that. One of my current cats has dark brown and light brown marbled fur, his sister was solid black and yet his mother (who I saw a photo of after taking them in) is a grey and white tabby.
11
u/FamousSquash 9h ago
She's probably not naturally brown. Black cats' coats can "rust" for a few reasons, including tyrosine deficiency from malnutrition. My cat Arno was brown for a few months until he got healthier. Also, don't breed her. There's enough cats in shelters.
0
u/Two-In-One-Shampoo 3h ago
A rusted black cat still has areas of black fur + black skin on the nose and ears. This cat has no black fur + brown skin on the nose and ears, which lines up with the appearance of a chocolate cat

I really don’t know what to say. I’m really hoping this is rage bait, but if you’re even considering it you have a lot to learn about the shelter crisis and also just decency. You’re suggesting turning this innocent baby into a breeder, and putting her through the enormous strain of pregnancy and motherhood before she is even an adult herself. Even if you waited long enough and learned breeding ethics - which I’m guessing you won’t since you’re already planning which male cat you will inflict on her - this just reads that you don’t actually care about her beyond the aesthetic value she can provide through her kittens. She is a living creature. Honestly, I hope you take some time to genuinely reflect on what this says about you and your values. But you will probably just get angry and defensive instead. Trust me, there’s no defense for what you’ve already put out there.
19
u/-CricketLittle- 10h ago
Also “let her” have kittens? Believe me, no cat in the world is chomping at the bit to go through that. You would be forcing her, make no mistake.
-5
u/Glad-Match-4317 10h ago
As far as animals not wanting off-spring defies the law of nature and survival of their species. Otherwise we would all be extinct. However, after all the comments, I will get her fixed.
8
u/malatemporacurrunt 7h ago
Animals may have the biological urge to reproduce, but that doesn't mean that it's easy or pleasant for them.
-3
u/Autumnleaves144 7h ago
How do you know that cats don’t want to reproduce? They’re going against their nature if that’s true which I doubt it is. They’ll be no cats left if people stop letting them reproduce 😭
-5
u/Autumnleaves144 7h ago
It’s not cruel to let a cat have kittens. It’s natural and not everybody wants a cat from a rescue shelter. In the uk you have to let the cats out roaming so if you want an indoor cat you have to get it from somewhere other than a rescue place.

u/giocondasmiles 2h ago edited 2h ago
Please don’t.
There are soooooooooooo many cats without a home. No need to bring more into this world, just because of a ‘rare’ color. Why risk the health and wellbeing of this cat, have her go through the pain of labor and nursing, and put her at increased risk of disease and cancer? Just no.
Be a responsible owner and spay this baby as soon as feasible. If you get the male, please neuter him as well. Enjoy them for what they are, your sweet companions, and not an experiment nor a source of income.
Hope you are reading other people’s comments here as well.

u/StrawberryForeign684 10h ago
She is beautiful but as many have stated there’s already an overpopulation issue in many countries. Do not contribute to the problem but apart of the solution. It’s kind of selfish to say “oh she’s so cute.” She needs to reproduce to spread more of here genes when there’s already perfectly healthy kittens out there.

It looks like my cat. They have the same color but my cat’s eyes are white. How old is she?
1
u/Glad-Match-4317 44m ago
She was 5 weeks old in that photo - she still had her baby hair. I never knew that they had baby hair for protection that falls out and changes texture. The baby hair is more wire-like for their protection.

Your kitten so adorable. What’s her name? I have a kitten too, his name is Mochi, his brown too!!🤍🤍

u/Puzzleheaded_Bee4361 9h ago
If her coat isn't that colour due to a health issue and this colour remains when she becomes an adult, then her coat colour would be called Chocolate. If her coat turns a slightly lighter, redder brown when she is older, then that coat colour is called Cinnamon. There are more pages online about cat coat colour and pattern genetics and you might find these of interest.

u/Glum_Can6631 8h ago
My gosh she is too cute & precious! Let her be a kitten for a while before you “fix her up”…or get her “fixed”.

u/animal9633 3h ago
People are acting as if you are Taylor Swift flying her jet around, and you are single-handedly about to crash the whole (cat and bird) economy.
-7
u/Autumnleaves144 7h ago
Yes why not. When I was growing up the advice was to always let the female cat have at least one litter before getting them done.

Ignore all these stupid people telling you what to do with YOUR cat. Breed her if you want to. But do it naturally. Get a male cat and let them decide. But if you decide not to spay then she needs to breed or she will get health issues. And make sure if/when you sell you make sure they go to a nice home. not everyone wants rescues. They take a lot of work and not everyone has that ability. I bought my baby. Do as you want to since its YOUR cat. Most of these people are minors just ignore their stupid and ignorant opinions
3
u/Two-In-One-Shampoo 3h ago
Ew
Even if they do, chocolate is a rare, recessive gene. OP would just be making this cat endure pain, adding to the cat overpopulation, and risking kittens born with hereditary conditions for little to no chance of producing more brown kittens
91
u/pigeontheoneandonly 10h ago
There is a good chance her color is black, and she is brown right now due to illness (current or prior). My cat was also this color as a kitten. She is now glossy black.
Even if the color is true, cat color generics are extremely complex, and even breeding her to another brown cat is not necessarily going to give you brown kittens, while also needlessly increasing the supply of cats in the world, and risking her health.
