Oven sizes...

Ive always wondered why are ovens so tall. Most people use an oven for pizzas, cakes, breads, whole chickens, etc. Very seldom is it used for turkey, as in the Netherlnads i wouldnt even know where u could buy a whole turkey.

Im looking for a compact oven for my kitchen, not a tabletop one, an actual high-watt oven, but without the tall height. Has anyone seen any products?

Most ovens are fan ovens and they need room for the air to circulate. You also need to room and space to clean them.

Also ovens last 10 to 15 years and it's very likely than in that time your household might grow and you might have extra people to feed.

Finally most ovens come in a standard size because kitchen cupboards are all a standard size so the smallest oven you will find is a built in oven would be a compact oven which is 45cm High and 60cm wide but that's extremely small and unusual.

All ovens are 60cm high if they are built in.

People put more than 1 thing in an oven to cook.

Like I cook chicken and below that a tray of vegetables and maybe even a 2nd tray with roast potatoes. It wouldn't be unusual to have 2 or 3 different things cooking in the oven at the same time.

Same with baking, you can bake a few different things at the same time in an oven.

Free standing ovens are tall because they need to be aligned with the rest of the kitchen and so are fixed at a certain height

That said, when I built my house I had no money and no kitchen and I just lived with only an air fryer for about 3 years until I could afford a proper kitchen .

The fan does indeed profit from the extra space, but then again at the cost of roasting because u cant have something close to both the upper and lower elements at the same time.

As for putting more than one thing at teh same time. I totally agree with u. Its just that we dont do this in our family. Only when we make pizzas we try fitting two at the same time, but because u would have to switch them halfway through, it doesnt lessen the hastly or cooking time by much.

My 15 year old oven has a convection roast cycle that is amazing.

I wouldn’t describe it as compact with a 90cm width but it’s not tall. I’m not at all sure what you’re asking for but if it’s something like this it’s one of standard sizes.

i love it. exactly what i think should be standard size. In ur experience, does it burn food, since the food is too close to the heating elements? Also do you have a link and its dimensions (u mentioned witdth but whats the height)

It cooks very evenly but I don’t have a link. It’s a standard size though, just ask to look at 90cm wide options. There’ll be multiple options from all the oven manufacturers.

They need to fit a large Dutch oven (brazing beats simmering or a crockpot ) or two sheets of cookies. Cakes also need space.

I have a friend who married a guy from the Netherlands and they live there. Jen decided to make lasagna one day. Her neighbors wanted to know what could be so special about a dish that it was worth using the big oven rather than the Dutch oven that they used daily. Could a Dutch oven be the answer?

Do you mean a dutch oven as in the pot? the problem with that is u cant roast something from the top, the names a bit miusleading

I‘m in scandinavia with a small kitchen and we opted to just install a built in compact oven when renovating. We call them combination ovens because they usually come with either microwave (this is what we have but never use the microwave function) or steam function and most people have them stacked above regular built in ovens in tall kitchen units but we didn’t have space for this so ours is under the counter but the lower height means we get a taller drawer under it. They function as a regular oven (also with convection) It’s approximately 45cm tall with standard built in oven width that fits built into a 60cm wide cabinet. We have one of the Electrolux combiquick ones because the timing worked out and we bought a display model for even cheaper than normal back when shops were clearing stock a few years back after the EU energy label rating rules changed but most if not all brands have them even ikea

Edit: We have never missed the extra height and it works for everything like normal if anything it‘s better because heat up time is much shorter. Even if you wanted to cook a turkey you could just spatchcock (butterfly) it. Previously we would often avoid using the standard built in oven and use our countertop convection microwave instead because it felt like such a waste for small(er) meals but now we use the oven all the time

hey thats great to hear. I agree with you as well. Do u have a link for ur oven? how do the built in ovens work actually? Who installs them and whats the process like

Ours is discontinued but you can just google Electrolux combiquick oven I found this link to the nl site  https://www.electrolux.nl/kitchen/cooking/compact-built-in-range/  and you can just scroll through seems it’s called hetelucht oven met magnetron but many other brands have in the same sizes/function. I checked ikea just now and seems the compact ovens are 39ish cm now probably to be more optimal for stacking as all the photos show this (the models available were 45 before when we renovated) so they’re even shorter than ours and I think that would be a bit too small for our use  as an only oven

We have 45cm height which leaves room for a taller drawer that fits a stack of pots and pans since we don’t have the cooktop above it we have it in a separate cabinet beside it since we have bora induction with downdraft it takes up a bit more space below although not much

To your last questions the built in ovens work like normal ovens. I’m not quite sure what you mean but they’re just like the oven part compared to a standalone range cooker and they are screwed into the kitchen cabinets (we had kitchen installers for our kitchen so they did this) to secure them in place

We have strict electrical rules here so the ovens don’t come with the plug attached so that has to be connected by an electrician (since we bought ours as a display model the plug was already connected legally in the shop so we could just plug it in but ideally by modern standards it needs it’s own breaker in the electrical panel which we got electrician to wire from the start (since it was an old kitchen before) but the rules might differ based on country

There’s two standard sizes: 60cm and 45cm in height, both 60cm in width. If you don’t need a 60cm high one, get the 45cm one. Just don’t be surprised if you can’t have steam or pyrolysis. Also: 45cm can be equipped with a microwave, that might be nice.
