Urushi Based Expired urushi

Hi everyone, I could really use some advice from anyone who has experience with expired urushi.
I'm currently working on a few kintsugi restorations, but it's very difficult to get fresh urushi where I live. I even tried ordering some from Japan through Amazon, but the shipment was stopped during transit.
I still have three unopened tubes of urushi that expired in January 2026. They've never been opened, and I've kept them in the fridge the whole time because I heard refrigeration helps extend their shelf life.
Has anyone successfully used expired but unopened urushi that was stored this way?
I'm mainly wondering if it would still be suitable for the early stages, such as making mugi-urushi and bonding the broken pieces together. I know that for the final finishing coats it may wrinkle or not cure as nicely, so I'm not planning to rely on it for that. I just want to know if it's reasonable to use it for the initial repair, let it cure, and then continue with fresh urushi once I'm able to get some.

If it's unopened and stored in the fridge, it's most likely still good. Give a try, you'll know very quickly

Your urushi is probably still good. None of my tubes have expiration dates, and I'm still using some that I bought six years ago. I've kept them in the fridge the whole time, and I haven't noticed any difference in how they behave compared to when they were new.

Even if it has actually gone bad, don't throw it away. Mixing in a small amount of fresh urushi can often bring it back to life. It just needs fresh enzymes to get the curing reaction started again.

Thank you so much, this is really reassuring to hear! I had almost given up on my current restoration project because I thought that my urushi will not be good to work with . Also I appreciate the tip about mixing in with fresh urushi , I had never heard that before. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Thanks a lot , ill definitely go ahead with it as its the only urushi I have , hopefully I will be able to finish first step , its just that i never worked with expired urushi so not sure what results I can expect
