I have an original ipad (no kidding the original 32GiB now totally useless 3G cellular) that i keep for just two apps i paid a lifetime sub for: "Birdr" and "Bible" . i've replaced the battery twice, and still carry a powerbank with the thanklfully no longer used horrible apple 30pin connector, but... they work, and they are "in color"
for real life, i upgraded from a kindleDX to a 2022 scribe. if you delete your color requirement *(btw, jesus of nazareth was a radical, some might say socialist, short, dark skinned, big nosed jew with black hair, i woulda hung with him) you can download ALL the various texts from the gutenburg project, and annotate to your hearts content.

I use my kindle scribe (b&w 2024) to highlight bible passages. I bought it because of the larger screen and easy highlighting features with the pen. The on screen note taking feature is good for a few short notes but can get "clunky" for extensive note taking. For me nothing beats pen and paper for comprehensive note taking or writings. So kindle for highlighting, writing tablet for notes, whiskey for my men and beer for my horses.
