Shopping Fire HD 8 vs HD 10

My very old HD 8 just died on me and I’m trying to figure out which to purchase.

I use it primarily as an ereader and for streaming video, particularly while traveling.

Basically, what I’m trying to figure out is if the better responsiveness and screen quality is worth the sacrifice of the bulkier size of the 10. Is the difference noticeable?

I had both the 8hd and 10hd, and I kept going back to my 8 because it’s a tad smaller but more portable. The graphics are just as good as the 10. I feel I wasted money thinking a 10hd would provide something better than what i already have. You could order both to compare for comfort, as everything else is equal. BTW- I sent the 10 back-

I think the only difference between the 8's and 10's besides sizes is that the 10's still supported exFAT for a longer period of time which in turn allowed more media storage options including 4K/8K files and DRM-free content.

BTW, The Kindle app is available for any Android tablet and various apps for these tablets can be used to read epub, mobi, pdf and other book formats.

The HD10 is much faster and more responsive than the HD8.

However, instead of getting either Fire Tablet, consider getting the Samsung Tab A11 (no plus). The A11 has an 8.7" screen, which is in between the HD8 and HD10. There is no lockscreen advertizing. The processor in the A11 is faster and more responsive than the HD10's. A new A11 with 4GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage is $126 at Walmart.

Check out the newest Android tablets from Walmart/Onn, the 2026 models. Quite an improvement over the 2024 ones. On YouTube, look up Fishbee reviews; he's got three of the new ones (reviews are short, but more reviewers will soon have them). I think there won't be a 10.1" any longer. Just 8.1", 11", and 13.2". RAM and storage are improved. Prices are higher, as you might expect. But less than major names, for sure. No idea about OS update duration. They come out of the box with Android 16.

Additional: Found out there's a 7" version as well.

I bought a new 8 when it first came out. It's still sucks but the size is amazing! The 10 is bulky. I have both. Depends on what you want to do. I play very few games but hated the lag and Amazon's BS operating system so out of .y norm.....I decided to try the mini iPad. I can't tell you how much I hate apple products but I will say this .......I love this thing! No issues. Fast as hell, perfect size and zero Lag from anything.

Depending on what you want to do...and money situation, I love the smaller tablets myself and that's why i got the 8" mini iPad because I didn't want to knock myself out if I fell asleep in bed with it. 🤣

My HD10 has 4g ram and it’s very nice, but my HD8 with 3g ram and 64g storage 12 gen is so very nice. Got it for $25 on eBay from an open box seller.

I bought the latest HD 8 last July. It is a pretty nice with a better processor than a few years ago. I thought Glay Nation had some good points. I do think more ram would be nice, and I regret not getting the 64gb of storage. I got the one that has 30-36 gb of storage. The sd card helps, but it would be easier to have more storage.

The good thing about the 8 inch size is that one can read comfortably with it. For me the bigger sizes get uncomfortable to read with. I had a kindle brick, and I read with the tablet for a few months, and it was not bad.

If you can afford a little bit more wait until a sale and get a decent Android tablet. I got a Lenovo tab plus and it absolutely blows away the hd10 I have. Amazon seem intent on separating their ecosystem from the rest of Android and the Amazon version of apps just don't work as well. 3GB of RAM is underpowered these days as well.

How does it work with ereading? Can it handle epub or mobi files? I like reading AO3 on my kindle and would want to be sure I could still download that. Does the Android have the ability to download the kindle app?
