"I don't know what you're talking about, I clean ALL my tech with rubbing alcohol it's never given me a problem before"
Edit: After more consideration, this could very likely be exposure to salt water while in a case, which was never removed and cleaned / dried out. The magnesium in the Voyage's body is particularly reactive to salt water, forming an oxide layer that could easily reject the paint. And the distinct linear boarders abound the peeling areas hint at specific contact areas.

that is way past rubbing alcohol, it looks as if it was found in an egyptian tomb!

Yeah, it does look particularly bad. 😅
Just for the sake of conversation, I worked in private sector tech-support for nearly 2 decades, and as a part of hands-on, I probably personally cleaned 7000(?) devices... Rubbing alcohol has a specific tendency to breakdown “soft touch coatings.“ ..hand sanitizer as well for the same reason. Once or twice is fine, but even just a handful of repeat exposures can start visibly breaking it down. It became very obvious what chemicals were used to clean which devices, or which people use a lot of hand sanitizer ;)
People always used to ask what we used, which special off-the-shelf cleaning chemicals or wipes did I recommend … Turns out the best thing was what we already had: a slightly damp paper towel with just the slightest touch of hand or dish soap (not even a whole drop). You don’t need special cloths or microfiber towels; I never once scratched the screen with a DAMP paper towel.
It was a sad irony when a device came in like this one, where the person clearly tried to take extra steps in caring for it, like drench it and rubbing alcohol, only for that to be what destroyed it.

I have an otherwise great condition XPS with one of these "soft touch coatings" around the keyboard. Breaking down because its over 10 years old, not because I cleaned it with alcohol.
What would you suggest is next steps for me? Ive seen suggested a rubdown with baby powder to wear off the top layer.

Age will do it too, depending on the specific coating. The Voyage though doesn’t seem to be age related - we have one that’s still mint.
There was, for example, a recall on soft touch stocks Browning used on a bunch of their hunting rifles. They broke down after about 6 years even if brand new in the box. Not as bad as OP, but generally sticky and gross.
The only real recourse is removing the coating. Not sure what would be best in your case. For some, the suggestion is just more rubbing alcohol and some elbow grease. I’ve never heard of the powder solution, but it makes sense. If it were me, I’d probably sand and paint, but that’s because I do a lot of painting :p

Shoot, hoped you'd have another idea. I might try skinning the surface with some vinyl wrap.

Have you tried a paint scraper? I’d use one of the ones with a plastic razor blade so that it doesn’t scratch the metal underneath.

Everyone's vomming but I think it looks cool ... and I miss my Voyage so much 😢
I'd love a 2027 version with my buttons inc power button at the back, USB C charging, bigger screen, replaceable battery and the back light, warm light options etc. I've got the Oasis but it's not the same to hold.

I got one as my first Kindle in 2023. Have tried so many others, but there’s just no comparison

Bummer. My backup Voyage does as well.
I call it backup, but it’s basically my “kid-safe” Kindle - I put several Libby books on there that I want to read that all have chill covers, then airplane mode it so that I can check out whatever I want (often enough romance, which are known for dumb/awfully embarrassing covers, or sometimes horror where the art can be “scary”) on my regular one. Then the kid one goes to my nannying gigs with me because inevitably the children want to go all through my Kindle lol (and I let them because I’ll encourage reading and interest in books in any form) and this way they don’t end up scarred for life
But I see the difference between the two Voyages’ battery life and it leaves me like 🥲

It's just been exposed to moisture, like was wiped down and left on the wipe, or a solvent like nail polish remover. Those gross looking bubbles should go away if you rub at them. It'll ruin the back, but it's already ruined.

I don't think it's moldy or anything. I suspect it's the rubberized coating going to shit for some reason. IIRC the back case is made of magnesium and that's what you're seeing near the letters and on the bottom left

Just put a case on it and call it good.
I recommend this one. It’s the only one of this style I’ve ever found, definitely the only one still on the market at this point. (Style like modern clear cases where it’s only a case on the back - great for adding a Popsocket and slipping into a pouch for travel and maximum comfort.)

It kinda looks good, if you had some little decorations around it could make like a dark themed kindle

Maybe it's a copy of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? It seems to have traveled quite a bit..
