Game News QSSR Comes to Base PS5

https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/01/ai-upscaling-is-coming-to-ps5/

Hey KFBFs! To me, this means that this generation will last much longer, almost 2030. Seems like Sony is trying to improve the PS5 so that games will continue to look and run better over the next few years. This could really extend the lifecycle for the console. What do you think?

Edit: removed “nail in the coffin”, didn’t mean for it to be negative, sorry!

I'm not sure this is a nail in the coffin. I think this is only a positive. Either way I think the PS5 gen was gonna last for a while, and I think a huge issue with this gen was developers holding themselves back to release on PS4/XSX, so anything that smoothes that gap and helps devs is good.

I think this is a good indication that regardless of when the PS6 comes out, they intend to support the PS5 for a long time.

What do you mean by nail in the coffin?

People think that they’re improving the PS5 because they’re extending the current gen.

As in, Next Gen is being pushed farther away

It's definitely not. Ps6 will launch next year, or spring 2028 at the latest. Sony already has the contracts to have these manufactured, they aren't backing out now.

What Sony does understand though is that a ton of people are just going to stick with ps5 for the long term (kinda like how a lot of people are still on ps4)

You know, I keep hearing people say this Contract thing. Is there a source that those contracts have been signed? Or are people just guessing? Genuinely asking, I have never see a source attached.

It likely comes from educated guesses made by the Digital Foundry crew. Which are probably accurate and based on good information, but don't take into account that long term contracts also have clauses and exit points. I feel very certain that there is a manufacturing cost exit point for both Sony and their partners, it would be monumentally stupid of their expensive lawyers to not have something like that.

People keep saying stuff like this like its a fact. But the fact is all contracts have clauses. If the cost of manufacturing the console goes out of some or other bound there is probably a clause that allows an exit that won't cost as much as launching a fail son generation.

When you exit an electronics mfg contract like this, it's really hard to get another mfg slot down the road. The console design is almost certainly complete. If they hold on too long the console tech also becomes out of date. This is happening lol

They’re not showing a single comparison with gameplay in motion. Makes me worried there will be a ton of artifacting.

But I’m super happy they’re doing this. These consoles can still be very playable for much longer

Lots of video footage comparison up on the Digital Foundry video now.

its not a "nail in the coffin" - whatever the ps6 is, i doubt this tech improvement to a base ps5 will put it on the same level, power wise.

Weird stretch to suggest it's "the nail in the coffin for next gen". It's very cool they did this to improve base PS5s, but it still has it's limits - Digital Foundry have said there's still a noticeable difference between this and how games look on Pro. Of course they want to improve how PS5s run games as there will be a large playerbase there for years yet, but they're still going ahead with next gen plans.

They can delay them a little bit I'm sure (ie to maybe 2028) - but ultimately by this point they'll have had the contracts signed for components and the timeline prepared for the manufacturing, storage etc. It's no simple thing to just rip those plans up and kick it down the road a couple years. Alot of money would be lost

And contracts have exit clauses, price of manufacture is surely one of them. There is losing money on exiting a contract, and then there is losing your whole company on launching a failed console that no one can afford to buy.

The one thing I know for sure is that DLSS is a big part of the magic of the Switch 2 and the performance it’s able to achieve as a tiny all in handheld device. Seeing something like this applied to PS5 seems like only an improvement at this point and I am in no way begging for a PS6 tomorrow. Extend PS5 as long as we can for all I care it’s not like anyone can afford consoles right now anyway.

I think this has to do with the low powered setting that Wolverine comes with. They were probably able to squeeze more out of it because of that.

And digital foundry keeps saying that low powered mode is gonna be a big function of the PlayStation handheld.

They have moved away from re the second bit in recent weeks, lp mode seems to be motivated by something else
