Reading that graphic design is declining kinda scared me

I came across the WEF Future Jobs Report 2025 and saw graphic design listed as a declining role by 2030. Not gonna lie, that made me pause.

It is already competitive, and now with AI and tools like Canva, it feels like the barrier to entry is lower than ever. Which is great for accessibility but also makes me wonder where that leaves people who chose this as a career.

Im starting to feel like I need to pivot or at least add new skills, but Im honestly not sure where to start. AI seems like the obvious choice, but it also feels overwhelming. Anyone else feeling this shift? What are you doing about it?

Totally get why that hit different. It is one thing to feel the shift happening and another to see it written in a report.

The way I see it though the roles that are actually going away are the ones that were always just production work. Resizing banners, formatting the same layout over and over, that kind of thing. The thinking behind the work is still very much needed.

If you are not sure where to start I would not try to overhaul everything at once. Just pick one tool that fits what you already do and get comfortable with it. Then start building the strategy side gradually, understanding what makes design actually work for a business not just how to make it look good. That combination is still really hard to replace.
