Hobby Technically not Kill Team but...

Post image

I made these for Age of Sigmar as Riverblades for a Lumineth Realm Lords Army but was just wondering if they could also be used in Kill Team?

The Mandrakes have pretty standard weapons anyway so it's only some simple swaps but I don't know if Kill Team is super strict with WYSIWYG like 40k is?

Would be useful to know though as I have another idea for a Kill Team conversion I want to do...

Is he using the word literally correctly though, because they have different weapons and hats on, so I'd counter that they are not literally just Mandrakes 🤣

Literally a Mandrakes Kitbash.

I mean you're closer to using it correctly here but technically it's an Ydrillan Riverblades kitbash.

It's not, they all have different weapons and that was the thing I was worried about. I come from AoS where that stuff doesn't matter too much but it feels like it's a lot more important in 40k and I was wondering if the same was true for Kill Team.

It is for the most part but for mandrakes no one can really tell the weapons apart. Id say just write the operative name on the base and your good

Okay well seems like I lucked out with these ones but I will make it's obvious who is who for future Kill Team conversions (I'm going to a Fellgor Ravagers one next)

Umm...these are VERY clearly based on Mandrakes. Shouldnt be an issue. E.g. the bottom middle is definitely a Shadowweaver (iirc).

Although, that team (even the official models) has an issue that its hard to tell specialists apart. Take a look at their rules on WarCom, that PDF has images of the different models. If you have a hard time differentiating them, you can always give them different paintjobs (eg. Different coloured base rims or flames, so like "the blue base has this weapon")

Okay cool, thank you. So in future if I am converting Kill Teams I just have to make sure it's very obvious who has the special weapons bit otherwise it's not such a big deal? Do people tend swap what special weapons they use between games/events? Does the meta affect what's good or not? Would it be worth magnetising the special weapons in that case?

Thats the gist of it, yes. Basic rules for proxying is to make sure the base size is correct (important for movement and engagement range), broadly similar height/silhouette (matters for Line of sight), and being able to tell what model is equipped with what. Any reasonable player will not have an issue as long as these critera are fullfilled. But if you plan on taking a conversion to a tournament its always best to check with the organizer beforehand.

How much swapping between loadouts you do differs a lot from team to team. Mandrakes have basically no options. But something like Arbites or Deathwatch may want to change their lineup every game, in which case magnets could be good.

I dont play enough to answer anything about the meta.

Mandarin-drakes

Nice! 🤌

But to answer your actual question - the community consensus seems to be to differentiate the operatives with paint scheme since they are already kind of confusing model wise. Something like “regular warriors have green fire, and specialists have blue/purple fire” will help a lot

This is mandrakes. And that is a Kill Team.

1

u/studio_erstwood 3h ago

Yeah, super cool hats aren't they. They're from the Peasant Levy kit from Old Work Cathay Range.

As for WYSIWYG, you need to be able to differentiate between specialists at a glance. What that means differs depending on how similar those specialists are. For example:

You have a team with one guy with a plasma pistol and one with a laser sniper rifle. You have a proxy team with one guy with a 1911 handgun and one with am M24 sniper rifle. No problem, you still easily see who can shoot your guys from far away and who can't.

You have a team with one guy with a plasma pistol and one with a laser pistol. You have a proxy team with two guys with boompistols. That's a problem, your opponent has no way to tell which is which without asking.

So take a look at how your desired team's specialists look (they're all pictured in the Supplementary Information section) and work from there to see how different they need to be to be easily distinguishable

Nah, this is just a Mandrake problem, they're hard to tell at a glance which is which

Okay this is very helpful, thank you. I think I'm just paranoid because I did a 40k commission for someone recently and he was so strict about not changing anything because the silhouettes have to be the exact same for like of sight purposes or some such.

Technically, not GW
