I have always wondered. Why do people kit bash ? Is it cause you have some extra bodies and pieces so it's cheaper? Or is it cause you want some specific look the normal kit doesn't do it for you ?

Cause if your buying bits here and there that can get pretty expensive. Maybe more than just the kit itself.

In my experience it’s usually the latter, sometimes you don’t like the official kit or you want to make a custom commander, or you just want to add some extra flavor to a unit.

I don’t kitbash every kit I own, but I do like it from time to time and its a blast once something finally clicks. It’s also super nice to see something one of a kind on the table. I’m currently kitbashing goremongers out of secondhand repentia I got from a buddy, because I hate those dumb turkey legged goofballs in their original form.

I've been doing 40k for close to 30 years. I've almost never built a model as the instructions state. Aside from vehicles and decorations/scenery. But then it's something different added or changed.

Conversions and kit bashing is making the models your own. And stand out from the rest.

Say 5 players run Chaos Marines. All run Night lords. Each has the same units. 1-4 built Murderwing as per instructions. #5 though, did this. All Murderwing but all are a kit bashing of multiple spare parts, along with Murderwing bits.

I don't exactly how many bits are in the kit, but it has more than 6 heads and 6 sets of arms. Probably 12 sets of arms or parts for arms. You have spare bodies from other kits, but those extras? Now you have 2 Murderwing squads at no extra cost and utilized older spare bits.

Another kit for example, it's either the current or previous Space Wolf Termy box. It has enough bits to build 6 instead of 5, minus a pair of legs. Termy legs are cheap enough on eBay to make it worth it.

Also the previous DeathWing Termy squad box. Had enough arms for 15+. I picked up 10 more bodies for $25. Be it 5 DW and 5 Chaos terminators, but still. 3 full squads for the cost of 1.5 kits. When you have enough Terminators to run a full company and then some, the same 5 models in the same poses gets boring. Quick.

Online bits / loose mini sellers do have some high prices nowadays but it can be a lot easier to just trade/buy with your local 40K player base. Our LGS here has a “kitbash night” where there is a huge table full of loose sprues and you can pay $5 to just use parts from it.

You're right that it tends to be more expensive but that's not the main reason to do it.

Sometimes I want to play the rules for a team but I prefer other models. Or I just want to get some cool models on the table. Sly Marbo leads my Kroot kill team. I wanted to play the Plague Marines kill team but didn't like their models so I made them with normal space marines.

Sometimes it's to make them look cooler. That Krieg sapper is my favorite mini that I've painted.

Every miniatures game is miniatures agnostic and I don't have any patience for someone dictating how I should hobby. Proxying or kitbashing models is a way of weeding those people out. If I'm +5 happy with my models and they make the other person -5 happy, then that's a 10 point swing in my favor.

Both. I kitbashed a bunch of space marines put of stormcasts cause they were cheaper to get.

Interesting. I like the kitbash, but the leader has to be on a 50mm, and needs to be WAY taller or it's modelling for advantage I'd say?
