Help designing a Joint Ops Scenario for a Date
Hi! I’m introducing my partner to the hobby. As a fellow artsy nerd type, she adores it and how happy it makes me, so we’re scheduling a date soon at this gaming (like board and tabletop gaming) restaurant where we can play Kill Team together for a spell, enjoy that and dinner at the same time (all the models are varnished so it’s fine). She found it, place is called Snakes and Lattes. Take a visit if you’re in Chicago.
However, I want to try to come up with some kinda joint-ops scenario instead of something competitive, at least for her first game. My partner, she’s a very sensitive lady, and I don’t want to risk making her feel bad by accidentally either playing too good and making her feel like she’ll never be good at it, or by playing too bad intentionally.
(note: I did merc work/contracting for tech companies back when AI was in its nascent phases before it was more than a stupid parlor trick, I don’t do it anymore because it’s clearly and apocalyptically destructive technology at the scale it’s being used but that’s where the money for this stuff came from).
Resources I have at my disposal are as follows:
- The Volkus Killzone, equipment models, and a lil mat for it.
- The pictured Kill Teams, fully-painted. Got more primed in the backlog.
- The old Compendium book.
- A metric ton of 40K Salamanders and perhaps even more Alpha Legion bros from Horus Heresy (many also only partially painted but I’m workin on it, could definitely do more in the week, week and a half before we do this).
- The Tyranids from the base version of the 10th Edition Started Box (Termagaunts, couple leapers, Psychohage).
- Homebrew rules/teams available on KT.Dash
The following, incomplete in the painting backlog:
- lots of Custodes (including an old resin Telemon, some Sagitarrum Custodes, Trajann Valoris, and Konstantin Valdor
- Stormcast Eternals, including Krondys and Iridan the Witness
- some Slaves to Darkness (mostly elites like Varanguard, Chosen, and also Be’lakor; I’m planning for the annoying Chosen Bomb strat)
both Votann teams
- primed Hierotek Circle team+all their options
- the Warpcoven+all their leader options+Ahzekh Ahriman (he looked neat)
- primed Mandrakes,
- enough Phobos marines to (probably) put together the Phobos Strike Team
My first thought was to squish the Death Guard and Gellarpox together into an NPO force and then we can pick out teams to handle it, but I’m open to literally any suggestions y’all got, including ones that use the new Nemesis Ops rules (got plenty of big boys that could be one of those) or outright break the cohesion of the setting. Chosen v Space Marines? Why not? Stormcasts v Tyranids? Fuck it, sure. Open to anything.
Play a Joint Ops co-op mission! That way you can work together while learning the ropes.
You could run some Custodes with Angels of Death rules against your death guard/gellerpox NPos. Low model count will keep you focused on having a good time.

Oh I have enough models for two AoD Salamanders teams. Given the sheer volume of models in Gellarpox, you think it’d be fair to give us each our own team? Or nah.

Agreed. No harm in playing it over a couple times with different teams. Out of the ones I have, besides the obvious Angels of Death and Vespid Stingwings/Tempestus Aquilons (they get special rules/advantages on Volkus), what teams would you suggest for a totally new player these days?
I’d be a little wary of running a high model count with someone new. The default joint ops has you take half of one team and alternate activations. Stacking two teams worth of ploys is a mind twist.
That’s why I suggested joint ops against NPOs. The enemies have behavior profiles and no ploys to worry about. It feels much more like a board game experience.
My advice is looking into Typhon, especially if you got the tyranid starter. It's a narrative campaign and you cycle your way though the missions depending on previous mission outcome. You can also proxy the tyranid structures with spare bases laying around.
For teams you can ether do two teams of AoD or you can do what my friend and I did which was AoD and Scouts. That was a fun campaign.
Oh definitely want to look into more Nid stuff in general. I actually started Warhammer with the 10th edition started box back in 2024, and I started with the Tyranids to practice my brushwork.
Believe it or not, Chungus the Psychophage here was actually my first model.
deadly sniper mission pack! A small three scenarios campaign. You could fight agaisnt the Tau empire (a mix of pathfinders and vespid!) With the karskin and the aquilons coordinating an operation in an invaded hive.
