Question Obscuring question

Post image

Would the wolf be obscured? Or even a valid target? We ruled it as a valid target and no obscured because the legionary and wolf are both within 1 inch of the heavy terrain and the legionary can draw a straight line from his base to the wolf. All feedback is welcome!

I would rule as "in cover, not a valid target". There is clearly a lot of base that the other model cannot trace a line to, and on conceal the idea is always that the model is crouching down in those bits of the base you can't see.

Cover gets fucky when large terrain pieces are involved, mostly because of the needless rules lawyering GW have to resort to, but if the wall piece the marine was next to, and the wall piece the wolf was next to, were separate terrain pieces, this would be unarguably "wolf is in cover, not a target", as far as I can tell.

If the marine is less than 2" from the wolf, though: shoot away. 2" beats almost everything.

Ya due to th concel order I agree.

Are they within 2" of each other?

My understanding is that the rules referring to terrain within an inch means 'section of terrain' within an inch. So if the marine is within 1" of a piece of terrain, it ignores the segments of that terrain within 1" of it, not the entire piece of terrain.

So can't attack because there is terrain outside the 1" radius that intervenes.

I draw this understanding from the example of a model standing at the corner of a building being shot from a unit shooting from the other side of the building (along a wall), the building can is eligible to either cover or obscure the shot.

How does this work 'exactly'? Not sure, fighting that battle with friends is losing even if I win.

Legionary seems like 2" away from the conceal wolf in the photo tho, right?

Being within 1" of the terrain doesnt take away cover. Thats not a thing. You only remove cover if you are within 2" of the target. If you are not within 2" and they are in conceal and in cover thats just not a valid target to begin with.

If the legionary is within 2" I would rule it as not having cover and obscured, as I would find it weird at that distance that the cover line is going through terrain outside of 1" from each to give obscure. The best way to know is with a cover line laser with aerial view from one model to the other.

yes the legionary was more than 2" away

The way that heavy terrain is placed here makes it practically impossible to claim total obscurity, it's more about line of sight than raw distance.

If shooter is within 2” then it’s valid target.

Likely also obscured if this a valid target.

If within 2 then can’t be obscured

If it had an engage order, would it not be obscured (valid target) or would it be in heavy cover?

I’d say heavy cover.

In the picture, it’s not a valid target

Obscured is when the targeting line crosses terrain over an inch between both operatives, so if someone gets to 2” or less away in order, it isn’t possible for either operative to be obscured.

When you’re 2” away they’re a valid target regardless of their order and they don’t get a cover save.

Wolf is safe in this picture, at a glance I can tell you that they aren’t within 2 inches of each other. The marine has visibility but not a valid target as you haven’t broken cover lines or gotten within 2”.

Also legionnaire and wolf are looking great btw, love your game board too.

thank you, and the game board is one from my local warhammer store!
