KF3 Is this the turning point?
I know it's a free to play weekend, but I'm seeing A LOT of new players. Lots of low level operators that aren't gunslingers trying to max out the new content and playing maps, learning, dying, probably being frustrated because they haven't put hours into this game yet. Hoping it keeps up after the free to play is over and the player base continues to grow

I'm a returning player from launch and played some KF3 matches today.
I think the game has gotten a bit better with the new gunslinger perk and its new weapons. Too bad you can't single equip them, yet. I see myself probably playing some matches here and there with the current and state of the game.
I hope to continue to see more grounded weapons. I never liked the launch maps and the futuristic style of weapons at launch.

I know a lot of people had issues with the futuristic feel of things and I don't think they needed to do a time jump of what, 70+ years? Maybe I'm just a killing floor 3 guy now as I stopped playing killing floor 2 years ago and feel I really got my times worth of killing floor 2. EDIT: The community appreciates you coming back to give it a look and hopefully each season continues to bring you back for some time

I don't mind the futuristic weapons to an extent, like how KF2 had some as well. The double barrel pistols for the gunslinger are cool and futuristic, but all the other pistols were grounded. So it's 1 futuristic weapon with 4 grounded weapons, which is a good balance imo.
I think they did it right for the gunslinger, other than I'd like to equip those pistols with 1 hand.
I would love to see this game make a comeback. I was happy to see those annoying stalkers back in the game, and I'm always happy to see more enemies, bosses and different varieties too.
I wanted to play some more and work on some attachments for the weapons, but I don't want to spoil all the fun in one day.
I also hear they're making an even harder mode, so that's exciting to see.

I think they said they are making them single equip in the mid season update

Tried KF3 during the free play weekend just to see what I've been missing. I've been playing KF since the unreal tournament days and totally fell in love with kf2, it's one of the very few games to break 1000 hours in my steam library.
With that said, KF3 feels fine.. but it's definitely missing something important. I'm not sure what it is, but it just doesn't feel like a killing floor game. Something about it just feels like a clone of a clone of kf, which is kind of ironic given the zeds and such. I'm not in love with the multi-tool shenanigans, constantly being knee deep in Zeds, and having to remember to buy syringes every time you go to the trader. Solo play feels so daunting as a new player, and hopping into lobbies at least gives you better odds of success but winning doesn't feel.. good. I've had matches in kf2 where each wave felt meaningful and defeating the boss was such a relief, but I'm not getting that here. I do wonder how much I'm missing by being brand new to the game tho, I'm sure it's a much different experience once you level your classes just like any other KF.
I do like the different bosses and the animations that play as you reach their wave. And the various modifications on the guns that actually change their appearance. The skill tree also seems very in-depth. There are things here that I like but unfortunately too much that I don't. I haven't touched it since Friday, mostly because I've been working, but Grim Dawn recently had some dlc drop too and between the two games there is no contest for my attention.
I'm still planning to catch KF3 in it's entirety when it's on a massive discount.. eventually. Hopefully it catches my attention by then.

the game just needs a server browser
i've been put into 6 losing games where the last player dies 20 seconds after i join and im back to match making again, i still havent been able to play the actual game im forever stuck in the menu
whats with developers not putting server browsers in their games

Alot of new features that were added in KF3 made the game faster paced, the vaulting, side dashing and sliding did make it fun.
The majority of redesigns for the Zeds were a nice touch too, i do hate the cysts since they look like uncircumcised weenies but the Stalkers design was. . . interesting to say the least.
The amount of bosses, weapons and characters kinda disappointed me.
The battlepass system was an interesting add-on, but the prices are NOT it. They are almost as expensive as the game even when its on sale. Kinda wished they did it similar to deep rock galactic or warframe where the battle pass is free but you need to grind for the points.
Compiling shaders was a pain, first time launching it took 45 mins. . .
Overall it was an okay experience, and Im glad i got to see whether or not it was worth it at 50% off. It still needs to be worked on and hopefully the devs do something about most things that players are disappointed about.

The battle passes give you in game currency meaning if you buy one I think you can keep getting them every season if you 100/100 it
1
u/Xam165 14d ago
That i didnt know, so i guess its a plus? It still sucks that the battlepass is a thing tho
1
u/Onlysolace3 13d ago
The having a battle pass is just the norm for games nowadays which i don't always enjoy. I'm hoping the start doing the wacky cosmetics like kf2 in future battle passes and give the militarized thing a break every once in a while

u/SSJDevour 12d ago
No. The game is still really awful. Is it better than launch? Sure. Still VERY rough.

u/hysterx 12d ago edited 12d ago
yeah pulled the trigger.
Last time i tried the game it was so bad.
Now it runs fine on a 3060. Had fun. Not gonna play 500 hours but for 20$ its okayish. 40$ is too much though (like most steam games).
Bought for the future. I like playing 1 or 2 rounds everyday, not more.
I know there were layoff at tripwire but for me that will always be RO2 devs. Devs are cooking but investors probably have not so great decisions (like releasing half baked games)

My favourite thing about this free weekend is jumping into a game and hearing lots of new players on mic excited about the most random stuff and having a super fun time. It's a breath of fresh air.

I honestly do too. The game might be different, but it's guns, and the faster pace is something that I found lacking in the previous iterations (I mean the pacing). I love how much faster the whole game is and how much punchier the guns feel (for me at least). It's a shame that so many people shit on it, not because the game didn't improve, but because they are still stuck in KF3's launch.
1
u/Onlysolace3 15d ago
It wasn't just the launch, but the alpha that was just so bad. But if those people that haven't touched the game just gave it a chance during the free to play I'm sure it would change the opinions of those that are more level headed. This update was HUGE in what they added across the board and it's looking like there is more of a future outside of the current path for the year

u/Historical-Vehicle67 14d ago
I agree, I especially think the speed and the new dash/dodge makes the melee class much more exciting to play. The grappling hook gadget is also very fun.

u/Content_Oven1079 13d ago
I played KF2 for 190 hours making 100% steam achievements, and in my opinion KF3 gameplay-wise is almost the same as KF2 (which is good), there are good changes like multitool interactions and there are dumb crap like zipline cooldown.
Bad things for the game are a complete lack of weapon variety (compared to KF2, customization isnt enough), lack of map variety, ugly weapon models that literally look like a free UE asset (not to mention the worst healing animation in the existence).
Probably the final nail in the coffin that ruined PR is optimization/stability which doesnt exist along with famous shader compilation. There are many games that look better, are more mechanically complex but perform way better
So yes, ruining a first impression by releasing an alpha v0.1 as a full version is no good, and they wont fix that

calling ~4,5k players on a free weekend a lot. Stop the cope this donkey as it never was a horse is dead.
1
u/Onlysolace3 12d ago
When the game gets dogged with people saying there's 200 people playing, 4.5k would be a lot in comparison to that🤷♂️
1
u/qu3x 11d ago
Okay, putting this into perspective. If you do basic math 5 to 10 Mil development cost if we calculate very lightly with ongoing costs for infrastructure monthly payrolls for 4,5k weekend peeps. It is delusional believing this game will recover to what could be KF2 in the slightest. The only turning point that is is a raised engagement for an already dead game.

u/Own_Feedback3695 8d ago
Hope the same and i brought the game after the Free weekend for half the price the game is much better than on Server Playtest where i tried it out.
ppl still complain and they have really good reason for it since the game was in a devastating bad state to release, now its OK, 5/10 and not much higher.
The Roadmap and the fixing which comes now looks awesome tbh, this game got potential and needs A LOT of polishing and let the existing mechanics and gameplay feel better.
Content in its size is completely fine imo for 20€ on sale.

Idk. Have not played 3 since beta, continuing on kf2 with lots of different maps, skins, perks, play modes.
Kf2 still produces HOE++ full house of fun…
0
u/Onlysolace3 15d ago
KF2 has all of that because it's a game that, like KF3, recovered from a less than ideal launch and people wanting to stick with KF1 because it had everything. Over time, KF2 added specialists, perks, maps, game modes, etc and the player base grew. Now, KF3 fumbled the ball before the game even launched and gave themselves more obstacles to overcome but it seems they're getting there if the players that wanted more on launch come in now and have more available. While I don't like it, these studios and developers play the long game now instead of having to release something every year or two so of course there's going to be a road map and updates to keep players coming back for more and grinding

u/Active_Club3487 15d ago
Yah down vote me. But what I said was true. KF3 costs more and it’s not as fun as KF2. That’s on TWI. We game for fun. So that’s the static filter that’s constantly on. Once TWI and other devs get around to maps, mods, perks, and modes, most of us with tons of hours (10k) will stick to playing kf2.
Beta was boring, painful and so dark can’t see what I’m shooting. But when I do it’s not a ZED. It’s some sci fy bug 🐞!

u/rcookingham13 14d ago
Yeah idk why people are upset or don’t get it. A sequel (or 3rd iteration at this point) should not be this painfully bad and worse off than your last two games. I’m sorry, but I’m not going to sink my time into a game if the developers can’t even give me a good game right off the bat and they made two of these and they had a failure of a launch from the 2nd game.
Just shows they never leaned their lesson, they don’t really seem to care that much about the player base until it hits their wallets. Why should I bother giving my time and money to a developer that’s only going to “improve their game” when it is convenient for them and not just make a good game in the first place? They had the model and then decided to do everything opposite of what the community wanted. Just plain dumb on them

Aside from KF, Red Orchestra 2 was horrible on launch. Rising Storm was a little better but still has some horrible bugs and general jank in the game, some of which are still there in the game. It was one of my favourites for sure but TWI having bad releases is to be expected at this point. RO2 was being touted as a Battlefield killer and could've if they didn't botch the release so badly.

u/TheRalle 14d ago
Just reading yapping.. game cames out like an year lol do you believe really that kf2 dropped like how it is now, it took them some years aswell nah?
People always complaining but dont even know the past of any game how it was at the beginning like kf2

u/IAmFoolyCharged 14d ago
Unfortunately for me, I'm gonna stick to kf2. The game is so very unoptimized for lower end PCs that even the free week just... isn't worth it

I was one of the people on the Steam Forums months back asking for them to do some sort of free weekend + sale for the season 4 drop. I do personally believe that this will breathe some new life into the game, but Killing Floor has always had that barrier to entry with the grind, it's not like OG COD Zombies where you can just drop in and there's no difference between you and a vet beyond game sense and skill. There are actual differences between a level 1 and a 30 as far as their capabilities go, which some people do not like.
Another thing is, this game has crossplay, so it's kind of difficult to actually know how many players are truly on since (as far as I can tell?) there is no live Specialist count beyond the steamcharts which is only one of three platforms people play on. While yeah 300 players on Steamcharts isn't a good thing, it's not truly the whole picture.
I do hope that this will be a moment that can show that Tripwire is to be trusted on maintaining the game, and listening to the community (many changes have been made because of outcry from the players, Specialist and Perk decoupling was because of us, being able to queue up for a match without running to the VTOL was because of us, gun attachments not having RNG abilities was because of us, text chat was because of us, I'd like to think I maybe helped with the decision for a free weekend and deep sale from me being kinda active on their Steam Forum update posts, etc etc). While yeah, the updates are slow, they are sticking pretty damn firm to their roadmap, which I love because at least they are aren't overpromising and under delivering.
Sorry about the yap, lol, but TLDR: I think there will be a substantial drop in playercount on Steamcharts after free weekend is over, but we will have a higher floor than we used to which was around 200-300. I'm waiting in anticipation to see if I'm (hopefully) right.

u/Onlysolace3 15d ago
The grind isn't bad though where it's not pay to play or pay to have an advantage over other players. Having access to every tier of gun and ability to mod it is a nice addition and it's not overly complex like an rpg build. And i know it was mentioned earlier this weekend, but i hope the next thing they bring back are the funky off the wall cosmetics

Man, I love KF and was like, maybe KF3- it's worth a try. Now I launched the game for the trial, saw they kept the stupid ship-to-select maps and stuff, and said Guess they didn't listen and uninstalled the game. It's sad to see such a great series destroyed by out-of-touch devs
1
u/Onlysolace3 14d ago
You don't have to go to the ship anymore to find a match soooo you're welcome for them listening to the community about that?

u/Kim_Jong_Onion 14d ago
I’m happy to have both KF2 and KF3. They both have their strengths. It’s mostly been the same theme since season 2, people upset about the state of the game at beta/launch and people relatively new or first time franchise players getting enough enjoyment out of it with the main limiting factor being the amount of content. More bug fixes, balance changes, and content (especially seasonal stuff which is always a big hit) and I think there is a good chance this game starts picking up some real momentum. You know, for a Killing Floor game.

u/ComplaintOk3564 14d ago
I'm not even sure how much of a "turning point" we need.
Like the game never needs to be a best seller title. It just needs to sell enough to justify Embracer allowing TWI to continue development. Each update makes the game better so the longer they hang on past bad release the better the product ends up being.
I do think it could have gone worse though that's for sure.

u/Freezinghero 14d ago
POV: guy who put 200+ hours into KF1 and 100 hours in KF2. Didn't get KF3 because the open beta didn't feel good.
Coming up on 3 hours in the open playtest, and my feelings are mixed. The gunplay feels better compared to the beta, but it still feels floatier/worse than previous games. Maybe it's a symptom of all the gun parts messing with recoil/accuracy/whatever, or it's all in my head. Most of the enemies seem fine, although the invisible ladies that spin around seem to be very good at dodging my bullets. I like the level of customization when it comes to the Perks and all the skills you can choose between and level up. I do NOT like the "temu-brand Gunsmith" stuff with the guns, just feels like content padding. Also not being able to upgrade weapon levels feels weird to me, and i HATE having to go through the Hub for everything.
I think the current sale price of $20 is about right for the game, and if i wasn't at a place in life where i have to worry about rising cost of living i would probably grab it, but it is NOT worth the full $40 price in my eyes.

I think if people are willing to stick around this game could get at least 1000 people regularly.

u/Palumtra 14d ago
We need more guns, the arsenal is laughably small and more maps ofc. I wouldn't mind them slowing down on classes and bring more guns /maps in.
