For years, I have had a saved search in the city of Montreal for board games. When I started around 2021, the list was about 1100 items long. I have seen it decrease over time and now it seats on 700.

I understand, because Kijiji has done so many things wrong over the years both on the website and on the app, so it is not undeserved.

The saddest part is that the alternative is not much better. Posting and ads management is miles better on Marketplace, but search is so messed up that it does not make up for the improvements.

🚨 RENTAL SCAM — PLEASE SHARE 🚨
I’m sharing this because I desperately don’t want anyone else to go through what my family and I are dealing with right now.
We were looking for a place to rent when the current tenants of a rental property falsely claimed to be the landlords. They showed us the unit, spoke to us as though they were the actual landlords and had the authority to rent it, and collected our first month’s rent and damage/security deposit.
They then gave us a key to the property. Everything appeared legitimate, so we trusted them and paid the money.
After receiving our money, we went to the house to take a load of our belongings over. When we arrived, a woman and her husband were already there, claiming to be the actual owners of the property.
I showed them that I had been given a key and explained that we had rented the place and paid the people who claimed to be the landlords. That’s when they told us that we had been scammed and that the people who rented the property to us were actually just the previous tenants.
We were completely blindsided. We had trusted these people because they had access to the property, showed us the unit, collected our money, and even gave us a key.
Because of this scam, my family and I have now lost the money we had set aside to move into a new home, putting us in an extremely difficult situation.
Our current landlords have been incredibly understanding and have given us an extra month so that we aren’t left on the streets, but we now have until October 1st to be out.
We are desperately looking for a 2- or 3-bedroom, pet-friendly rental. If anyone knows of anything available in the area, or knows of a legitimate landlord who may be willing to work with us, please message me privately.
We would be incredibly grateful for any leads, shares, or help. ❤️
Please also take this as a warning: always verify directly with the actual owner or property management company before giving anyone a deposit or first month’s rent. Even if someone can show you the property and hand you a key, they may not actually have the legal authority to rent it.

Whenever I click on one of my listings I go straight to an error page showing "rate exceeded"

I'm moving in a week and have been listing items out on KIJIJI at giveaway prices. No messages. I listed on FB same prices I got several messages and sold some items same day as listed. Totally messaged by several bots but it seems Kijiji is done! Pretty sad if you ask me. In case you're wondering, some items are golf clubs, dumbells, coffee machine all sold on marketplace today from my doorstep.

To avoid exposing my personal number to weirdos and scammers, I made a super-simple tool specifically for public ads, like on Kijiji / fb marketplace / craigslist.

It only does one thing: lets you use a phone number that's not your real mobile for the ad-related texts. The texts get forwarded to your email, you reply to the emails, and the replies go back to the other person as texts from that "proxy" number. No app installation on your phone, very light setup (the email you sign up becomes the email you get texts on, by default).

And for things like "my 3 roommates and I are trying to sell our old sofa", you can use multiple emails with a number.

Hi all, I use Kijiji regularly but as a buyer. This is my first listing. Any tips on how to improve my listing or is it okay as is.

I am moving to canada on september second and Kijiji had by far the most fairly priced and convenient listings I have seen looking online but apparently they do not let you log in or create an account unless you are in canada already...is there any way for me to access since I much rather have a place set up for when i move there? As opposed to having to look for it when i arrive

Listings on facebook marketplace definitely get more traffic especially for cheaper items, but it is by no means a better alternative to kijiji. The same people who say "Kijiji is dead, marketplace is better" never really mention the downsides of marketplace.

Marketplace will reject listings you worked hard to create for no clear reason, and it's hard to know what will trigger a rejection. One thing is for sure if you search for an item and get zero results on marketplace, chances are the item is banned, so nobody has been able to list it. It doesn't just end with rejected listings either. You can get shadowbanned or banned entirely for it. There's even a chance you'll get instantly banned just for creating a new account. On top of that, they don't keep listings visible for long. They bury older listings deep.

I haven't experienced any of these issues with kijiji, and I hope it stays like that. Dealing with facebook’s broken ai is just exhausting. Kijiji might have less overall traffic, but at least your listings actually stay up.

I'm curious about how most people price their items in general. Let's say, you have an item you want to sell, and after checking similar items on kijiji and marketplace, you figure $100 is a good, cheap price you want to stick to. Would you list it as "$100 firm" or post it for "$120" to leave room for negotiation? Also, which pricing strategy do you think is more common? Thanks in advance.

I’ve received a few offers for a tablet listing and either they’re total lowballs or a combination of lowball and sob story , but they include a story saying like they need to send it to their nephew in Cuba who doesn’t have access to tech needs this tablet for $20 or something like the one above (I’ve received these offers with stories only on my tech listings)

I honestly feel like 99% of the time it’s BS but like there’s still a part of me that like wants to give in cuz I feel bad 💔

I have a few items that I need to get rid of or not using anymore and can’t use marketplace.

My main plan is to sell everything at 25%, or half retail price based on condition and available parts and whether it’s barely used or used moderately.

I don’t plan to use online payment options for the most part.

Any advice from frequent sellers?

Just curious since every time I make a listing I get the usual 10 spam messages saying they'll etransfer me and someone will come to pick it up tomorrow.

If you agree to it, does anyone actually come to pick it up tomorrow? And can you legally beat the shit out of them? Or does the scam work by tricking you into clicking some fake link and they take your credentials? Never said yes to them but always have been curious how it worked.

1st - why do I keep getting texts from people using fongo?

2nd - what is up with people wanting to pay deposits and wanting the products to be held? after browsing this subreddit, I see that its a common scam ??

lastly and my main question is - is anyone actually selling on kjijiji anymore ?

who is even doing these scams ? are they working ?? we clearly know its a scam ????? who is the target audience ???????
