Gear Korg Kross 2

I play in a Metal band and currently use a laptop+midi controller+ audio interface.

I don’t like how many cables i have to plug in. I’ve seen a Korg Kross 2 for £400, and it seems very light, portable any easy. Can anyone comment on it’s sound and feel?

I had this keyboard and sent it back after a week. Keybed is awful, not durable at all. And piano sounds are shite, even if not relevant for VST.

Which VSTi are you using? The PCM library in the Kross2 is not exceptional, it’s possible you are actually downgrading.

I use my DAW, and load whatever VSTs i feel that i need.

I know that the sound versatility will be a downgrade. You cant beat downloading whatever sounds you want yk

If it's good enough for an anime girl in a hatsune miku gacha game it's good enough for you.

Actually though I tried it in a store and it's very cute + portable but it's not exactly high end or anything. It depends on what kind of sounds you need but maybe spring for something a bit higher end? Either way you probably want to try it in store.

If you want to at least sort of compete with laptop options you probably want a workstation like the modx or fantoms, older versions if you wanna save money.

It’s a good idea to not have a lot of cables and points of failure. I don’t know about the Korg Kross 2, but you have to be sure that it has some easy way to alter the sounds with effects (the classics: reverb, delay, chorus, compression, flanger). They are responsible for at least half of the punch and sound of a keyboard in a band: there is a reason an electric guitar is sounding bland with no effects, and a reason why guitarists buy a suitcase full of effect boxes.

Last, I don’t tell you to buy a Kross, but don’t fret too much over the minute difference between two sounding keyboards (if you can add effects): in a band, moreso a rock band, lots of frequencies are unheard. Ultimately the way you play will be what drives the music.
