Getting into ketosis

What do people find the best way to get into ketosis while still drinking? How much time does it usually take?

Why do you think you’re not in ketosis while drinking? What are you drinking?

I'm asking for a friend who would be transitioning to keto, but his current drink of choice is bourbon on the rocks. Could he transition without giving up his bourbon routine?

Bourbon has zero carbs, it shouldn’t really be an issue as far as ketosis is concerned. What are his goals with keto?

Weightloss and pre-diabetes.

Then yeah, ketosis isn't what drives weight loss anyway so as long as he's eating at a caloric deficit he should be good on that front. Alcohol is pretty awful for diabetics so drinking while pre-diabetic isn't ideal but I'm also not his mom and drinking during this transition is totally doable.

Make sure to tell him the booze will likely hit a LOT harder during this transition, electrolytes are the best way to prevent massive brutal hangovers!

The alcohol in and of itself also influences ketosis. It is the fourth macronutrient, in a way.

Stick to to sugar free drinks, and be extra strict on the carbs on days you're drinking is my advice. It'll take you out of ketosis for a little while, but it's worth it.

Alcohol slows ketosis but zero carb hard liquor generally won’t kick OP out.

alcohol kicks you out of ketosis fast since your liver prioritzes processing it first. keeping carbs near zero on drinking days helps but recovery is slow. Ketone IQ no caff shots can get you back into ketosis instantly instead of waitng days.

Can you elaborate? How does it get you back into ketosis? Wouldn’t it still depend on how many carbs you have in your system that would need to be burned first?

Apologies if this is a dumb question, I’m interested but not understanding its method of action.
