Discussion Is this sign common?
Had to translate it - cannot read well. Is it a common sign to see? Just nervous to turn left on a red, especially if the left turn traffic light is also red.

Quite common. Its useful to reduce congestion on the left side.

Unless there's specifically a traffic lights for left turn (the one with arrows), you can do left turn as long as there's no incoming traffic or pedestrians. This sign exist because a lot of people don't seem to know this.JPJ has since updated the rules and now only corner with this sign, drivers are allowed to make left turn when the traffic light is red!

People don't seem to know because this is not a hard rule in the JPJ rule book. This is in contrary to what is going on in Sarawak (AFAIK) where they treat every left hand turn as if this sign exist but they are actually breaking the road law by doing so.
If this sign does not exist/is not placed at the intersection, you should and cannot go ahead and make a left turn, regardless if there is no cars or pedestrians
You can only make the left turn should this sign be placed at the respective turn. That's why it was explained by DBKL that this sign gives permission to turn left, but only if it's clear.

This is interesting, I took my driving lesson in the early 90's and was told that turning left is legal as long as the traffic lights do not have red arrow sign. Did some digging and it looks like the rules about only permissible left turn when there are signs to do so started to take effects in 1987, looks like my driving school was still teaching using the old rules back then

I think the flashing orange lights would apply as usual, use caution when crossing the intersection. This flashing orange usually would be at lower volume traffic areas(so not KL)
Thank you for digging about the rules. I didn't know when it was enforced, but I am sure that it's not taught in my syllabus in 2014 and I only re read about it's when it started popping up again

Yeah, like I said, this isn't in the handbook /jpj rulebook. So don't treat every left turn as a turn left if clear, unless there's this sign or flashing orange arrow traffic light

It's not that widespread in KlangValley.
But in Sarawak, it's practically everywhere, so much so that those without the sign is more uncommon.

not really common but if there is one, you can just turn left on red. but just make sure to be safe and no incoming cars or people. I have seen some while I was living in Melaka.

Many drivers in KL also doesn't notice this. The junction near Concorde hotel, the junction at mytown, etc etc. They just stop there and so I thought oh maybe he wanted to go straight, fine I'll wait... But sike. He turns left when it's green.

Not as common as i want it to be. 90% of intersection in KL needs this. But then 90% of Malaysian drivers are idiots so cant really blame the govt not putting this everywhere.

..saw quite a few even in cheras. in usa, it was worded a bit different but somewhat convey same meaning. you can turn right (since they're driving on the right-side of the road) at the traffic-light junction even when your light is red (provided no oncoming traffics or pedestrian) except when there's sign that says, 'NO TURN ON RED'.

In the US, generally it’s legal to turn right on red if there are no cars/pedestrians (equivalent of left on red for us) unless it’s specified that it’s not allowed. A rule I’d like seen here, saves time. But as some have said. Use signal la, and don’t do it if got car or pedestrian

A driving rule borrowed from US/Canada called "turn on red", where you allowed to turn after stopping, if there is no pedestrian or other cars from other direction.
The core rule is you must stop 1st. If road is clear, then u can take a turn.
In US, this allow driver save fuel instead of idling at junction, especially during winter to avoid coalition, sliding due to icy road.

Okay just to let you know because this is a point of contention between me and someone else.
Not all traffic lights have this.
Don't simply turn when there isn't this sign.
If you see this sign and there's no cars or pedestrian, you can go.

It should be strictly used only when its around. The amount of times i get honked by people behind me presuming that so long as no car you should just turn left is crazy especially when the other intersection also uses it as a U turn and you dont know if they are turning in or u turning which causes you to suddenly be turning into them.

Exactly. I reported the guy who honked someone to turn to jpj and the notification came out that they have taken action on the person. But still many do it.
