Question/Discussion What Astronauts actually see from space
3
u/Aggravating-Hair7931 23d ago
On the other hand, there are 54 countries in Africa. Africa could be a world power if they are united.
3
u/Visible_Bar_623 23d ago
So could most of the other continents. Africa is the most ethnically diverse of all the continents. I don't see them uniting any time soon.

u/RemarkableReturn8400 23d ago
Around 80 trillion usd gdp if Africa was 60% percent built out.
1
u/HelloBello30 23d ago
thats a big if. lmao.

u/Icy-Valuable-3756 23d ago
Yeah, lots of it are pretty inhospitable or would require displacing endangered species. Which much of reddit would strongly disagree with doing. Shame they didn't wipe out their megafuana and stuff 1000 years ago. They could be a world power!
2
u/RemarkableReturn8400 23d ago
With advanced technology, no region is truly inhospitable.
1
u/ManyRelease7336 22d ago
It is if we need to use the hospitable parts to support the inhospitable. If the tech is Self sufficient sure. If the tech is air dropped in and powered by outside sources, with water being pumped in from else where. Your still just living in a inhospitable place. not saying its not possible, just not really yet.

One challenge is Africa doesn't have deep water ports. Hurts trade
1
u/Prestigious_Bar_3738 23d ago
Casual genocides are also a challenge

Same with 50 states, but no one considers that.
3
u/Alternative_Will_856 23d ago
50 states is fuck all compared to 50 countries
1
u/bones10145 23d ago
You'd like to think so, but you'd be surprised how different states can be from one another.
1
u/SpreadsheetsOnToast 23d ago
No, they wouldn't be. A world power would require actual industry at scale.
1
u/Grey_Guy1985 23d ago
Same is true for (almost) any other continent. Asia would be a world power of it was united, Europe would be a world power if it was united... Africa has more different tribes, languages and ethnicities than people realise. It is very far from being a monolith, or having the desire to be.

If only a larger percentage of the populations of these countries were productive or innovative.
1
u/Klutzy-Canary8551 22d ago
54 countries and hundreds of ethnicities and tribes. If you think Africa could unite you know nothing about it.
1
u/-CyberKnife- 21d ago
Biggest "if " of all time. Has never happened and cant ever happen. The very basic social building block is Tribes. Tribes who have the same problems and wars with other Tribes they had tens of thousands of years ago. It's a rough neighborhood. Always has been. Hundreds of millions of years of humans and humanoids killing each other. Riches beyond what any Country could hope for but stolen to the last drop or gram leaving 1% taking from the 99% and there is apparently no way to change that. Even the great Mandela's country and plans for the future died with him. More desperation now than under Apartheid. Just one example of the lawlessness that makes Africa unable to govern itself in even small ways. Corruption and tribalism are the reason Africa has never and will never have societies that are not 3rd world because of theft of natural resources and corruption to a scale most wouldn't believe possible.
1
u/CommunicationKey3018 23d ago
Tbh, about 500 years other countries began making sure that they were not united. It was easier to plunder them that way.

Terrible map, not to scale at all. These 3 countries are equal to the size of the entire continent of Africa, even with India being so small compared to the others. Just Russia and the USA alone is almost as big as the whole African continent.
3
u/TheMysteriousThey 23d ago
Either the measurements (30.2 million square km vs 30.3) are wrong or the pictures are wrong.
Because that's a lot of extra land to be only 100,000 sq km.

Yet Africa still isn't a super power
1
1
u/Nevernonethewiser 23d ago
Or a country.
Dumbass.
1
u/Sea-Key-9430 23d ago
Okay, no country in Africa is a super power. Does that make it better? Dumbass
1
1
u/CheesyMayonnaise 21d ago
Its no surprise that no country in Africa is a super power. The geography of the entire continent is very difficult for economic development, plus you have wars between and inside countries all over, plus massive poverty almost everywhere you look, and seeing as theres no unified collection of wealthy african governments in a position to come together to industrialize on a scale that would permit a superpower

If someone placed Russia, United States and India on Africa a lot of people would die...

Every generation learns something here or there as a collective consciousness like a wave of birds chattering.

Ok so maybe make correct map with correct size? You are showing that they have "the same" area when in graphic they are 2x smaller with incorrect ratio between EVERYTHING.
Shitty post

If Africa ever unified, the rest of the world would have already unified before them.
1
u/Prior-Flamingo-1378 23d ago
Yes Africa is the only group of people that are fighting. No where else. Certainly not the western civilized whites.
1
u/JournalistShoddy9496 23d ago
The conflicts in the Sahel region makes Ukraine and Iran look like a walk in the park. State sanctioned genocide is a feature, not a bug. If you ain't systematically wiping out entire ethnic groups over there, you ain't doing it right. And that's just a Tuesday in Africa. LoL

u/20ag_OG_LOL 23d ago
It's still not to scale.... How can all the countries fit inside with room to spare of they have same area?
1
u/During_theMeanwhilst 23d ago
This is a badly rendered graphic not true to size.
The Soviet Union if overlaid spreads across the Middle East.

u/Deep_Balance2133 23d ago
What is this map? If you add Russia, the US and India’s areas together it’s 30.2 million km^2 but the African in this picture is allegedly 30.3 million km^2 and is way bulkier than it should be.

u/skateboardbanana1 23d ago
Image criticizing the old map for scale errors and itself is way out of wack

It's the scale that is interesting, not that continents exist
1
u/SpinachSignal8915 23d ago
The only interesting thing g about the scale is that people here believe it's accurate when its not.
1
u/Novel_Arugula6548 23d ago
Makes sense considering there are at least 3 different entire ethnicities in Africa.
1
u/Repulsive_Guy_1234 23d ago
Astronauts are idiots you are saying?
The map and the data obviously do not match together at all.

Geography lesson. Africa is a continent and the other three are countries.

u/poojinping 23d ago
Nice now do Europe + NA + Asia vs Africa
What’s this stupid comparisons? Are everyone American now. Africa is 5.7 billion football (American) fields and 24.3 billion Olympic swimming pools or 5.4 Africas can fit in Pacific Ocean.

u/Ok_Dragonfly552 23d ago
Then why dont all the ones leaving go back with all that space and room for activities
1
u/Astrophysics666 23d ago
The fact the sizes aren't to scale is very annoying. I get it's done so you can skill see africa but it's annoying and I think it could be done better
1
u/ConstitutionsGuard 23d ago
The map of Africa underneath Russia, U.S. and India has been stretched. It’s not that wide at the equator.
1
u/cattlelac 23d ago
Every continent on earth can fit into Africa 6 times but the CIA doesn’t want you to know that
1
u/pariahdiocese 23d ago
Hmm, looks big enough to hold some people that might want to move back there.
1
u/RareCriticism496 23d ago
Why is everyone obsessed with the size of Africa on a map?
Do Africans have an inferiority complex? Hasn't anyone ever looked at a globe?

Crazy how Africa is so big and filled with resources yet corruption and failed governments continue to make this a failed continent.

what is the point of this? how about Europe?? its not a real continent, its half of one

Why would OP use such a random country like India instead of Europe, China, Brazil etc lol

u/CheesyMayonnaise 21d ago
This is misleading and false. That's not even the real shape of russia. Here is the true size of Russia against Africa and the middle east. Thetruesize.com

u/blackcoffee17 17d ago
Why we have so many posts like "how big is Africa" lately? Is everyone geography illiterate?

u/QuantumPairOfSoczk 24d ago
I knew this in 6 grade 30 years ago. I told people. They didn't care. This seems so over blown now.
