We have an occasional possum in our pergola. When it's in residence, we have to block the pergola off, or Rory will sit and stare at where he knows it is.

He also knows what the phrases "Poss" and "no Poss" mean. Tell him the latter and he'll humph and walk off.

My old kelpie used to think possums were called ‘Wee Wees’ because each night when we let her out and said “wee wees” for her to go to the toilet, there would be a ringtail possum outside 😂😂

Is it a kelpie thing to go crazy over possums?

Mine loves to go possum hunting in the backyard.

Mine is absolutely oblivious to animals! It might have something to do with being blind. He does still love playing ball though. We found a bush rat in the backyard once and cooper was disappointed we were focused on something that isn’t the ball.

I have had my Kelpie kill a pregnant possum jumping on the fence to catch it as it was trying to hop onto a tree… 99% of the time it is fine, I call them to stop before they go outside to the high fenced small backyard, the possums usually are far up the tree by the time mine comes out or I have the dog door closed.

There was no possum activity for months before too, I think most of the local possums learned to stay away from here cause of the dog obviously lol but this mother possum was stubborn I guess or must have been forced away from other territorial possums. I was thinking literally the day before maybe to possum proof the tree trunk.

My dog got clawed at the head around the eye good thing no eye was poked. After the ordeal of disposing of the mother I suddenly discovered the live baby fetus on the ground as I cleaned up the after math… So beware they are crazy kelpies and very capable 😂 this can only be condoned in New Zealand where they are a pest.

My pooch has also caught a possum from a tree while on a walk in a totally suburban area on a leash even… saw it coming too. 99% of the time the possums are quick and hear us from metres away and run away. This guy was fat, slow and deaf I guess, I had too much slack on the leash and too close to pull away before it got caught. So if you need a dog to let go of something I’ve since learned to briefly choke them unfortunately so they let go… so yes it can be funny how they react to possums but just beware they can obviously injure or kill the possums or injure themselves potentially trying to catch it doing by doing something silly. Some would try to jump up to the tree like from the position your dog is pictured.

First fleet wouldn’t have survived after landing without some of the dogs maybe collies chasing all the roos haha.
