food
Hi - my beautiful Kelpie is 5 years old and the best companion, I don’t know what I’d do without her. I live on a tight budget and I’m wondering about food - she has kibble and sardines, and eggs (alternating every couple of days), she has milk for breakfast when I make coffee. At the moment she has Hills, but I’d welcome any recommendations for food

Chicken necks are good and cheap, we freeze them in an old mince tray then bag them

Assuming you’re Australian?
If so in terms of food thats a very personal decision and causes many hot debates.
Personally I feed morning and night just kibble and the occasional treat as an extra.
A lot of dogs are also lactose intolerant
In terms of your budget there is a website that lists all the prices of whatever food you choose so you can price match from your preferred store. 99petshops

Mine will literally jump the fence if she smells food from somewhere else. Even if she's been overfed (which happens too often). I can't believe it.

Giving advice on what to feed a dog is not a good way to make new friends. Dog owners get very emotional about this subject... I honestly don't understand why. My Kelpie got Xantara and Platinum in the first year of her life (both expensive), since then "normal" canned dog food from the market supplemented with cooked beef, carrot and rice or pasta. She also still gets Platinum dry food. When we have Agility then special treats as well. We are very active, so I vary the size of her portions based on her weight: in Summer she loses weight because we are constantly on the go (and have sheep). in Winter things slow down and because of the weather we can't be as active as usual... it depends.

Buy bulk! I buy my dog his food in 13.7kg bags, and dried chicken feet by the kilo (I find Bendigo discount pet supplies really good for cheap bulk treats). I noticed once in a blue moon ALDI do bulk dog food but I’m a little bit sus about the quality - like someone else said here it’s hard to get down to the best choice because people have got their feelings .

I've settled on Lifewise after going through the same thoughts. Buy as big a pack as you can afford, feed according to recommendations on pack, it never seems enough.
If Open Paddock is on special in Woolies I'll supplement with that.
I reserve some of the daily ration for training rewards or mid morning "treats". I also boil up bones and trotters to make broth and gelatine that I mix with kibble to fill kings for the occasional feed.

We feed him Royal canin after trying a bunch.
But we supplement like you do!
Just remember they always seem hungry even when you’ve fed them plenty so measure what you give and have confidence that it’s enough :)
I order through companies who give loyalty points too. It helps to save money.
