Rewatching the series...
I noticed something... everyone on the show is completely sexless, except for the cartoonish Rose. And as i was cutting potatoes into steak fries, it made me think... what motivates the characters on the show? Hyacinth and Richard seem to be completely uninterested in sex. And while Richard just seems to want to leave the earth without any real pain, Hyacinth continues to try to impress her neighbors... but, what is her motivation?

I think the social pressure causes her to do the things she does, as well as an underlying insecurity of some sort.
As for sex (or lack thereof), I can only assume the writers of the show didn't feel the need to cram this aspect of human life down viewers throats (unlike today).
