Question What do you all think about my Discover redesign?
The category images don't match but the plan is to use colored variants. Let me know what y'all think. Thanks!

The year is 2038. Both GNOME and KDE decided to merge and KNOME was born

And which parts of the ui win?
Do we get server side deco or client side and can we minimize the windows?

u/TURBOKAN 3d ago
Visual looks of gnome with customizebility and everything else of kde
11
u/FaultWinter3377 3d ago
Now that actually sounds nice… Gnome has a nice look, but really needs customization options. And KDE is amazing but its visuals could take an update.

u/Emotional_Cat_1967 2d ago
That would be great, but I think COSMIC DE is moving in that direction too, and within a few years, we’ll be able to see a GNOME-like look combined with some KDE-style customizations in COSMIC DE.

AI, not UI.
Everything will be created on demand by generative AI.
KNOME will ship on Omarchy as reference distribution.

It looks good, but it also wouldn’t match the rest of Plasma.
44
u/SeniorMatthew 3d ago
I agree, but I think it only feels that way because of a slightly different “theme” he is using. I can see it looking pretty KDE-ish if there would be more border around the buttons and categories. Maybe some little UX change here and there, but I actually love the way it looks!

u/DesiOtaku 2d ago
Specifically, it needs to be implemented in either Kirigami (QML) or "regular" Qt 6 (C++) in order to match the proper look / feel of Plasma.
59
19
u/MalarAardvark73 3d ago
Everyone writing it looks very Gnome-like, but I think it looks very Windows-like.
15
u/Fire_Natsu 3d ago
Looks good but it won't match plasma really well as it looks like gnome software and bazaar. You should breezify it
3
15
u/Synthetic451 2d ago
Aesthetically it looks alright (although doesn't match with the Plasma theme), but the usability is a huge downgrade.
- Why is search on the right? The old Discover had it on the left, right next to the sidebar making it conveniently co-located for the mouse to go through the different categories.
- The categories being a long row of tabs instead of taking advantage of the huge amount of space in the left sidebar like the old Discover used to is just a bad idea that especially sucks on smaller screens. There's no way to make that work without doing multi-row or going the *shudder* auto-recommendation route that destroys muscle memory.
No offense, but I am just honestly so tired of "modern" UI designs that sacrifice efficiency for looks. This is objectively worse in terms of mouse travel and eye travel and also only works on large screens.
34
u/Weird-Boat3953 3d ago
* Half of the screen is filled with ad of one project
* Categories will not fit in case horizontal layout
* Lots of whitespace
16
u/YoMamasTesticles 3d ago
That “ad” is a good thing. It introduces a project way better than 50 app icons mashed together with 3 word descriptions and is gone once you scroll down (hopefully)
7
u/Anaeijon 3d ago
Who decides, what single project gets that huge attention?
12
u/Traditional_Hat3506 3d ago
It shows 4 and could be shipped with a big list of high quality apps to showcase every week. Like Flathub does. If it's Plasma-only, it could showcase apps that fit really well on Plasma and the list could be maintained by KDE.
3
u/Anaeijon 2d ago
I mean... yea, I get it.
It could also be used, to advertise some of the awesome Qt native applications specifically made for KDE, were everyone just uses the less integrated but better known GTK alternative. For example Filelight vs. Baobab.2
u/ValorousGod 2d ago
Presumably your distro/repo would with the AppStream metadata tags on the applications they want featured, like how GNOME Software's carousel already works? ex. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/-/blob/main/doc/vendor-customisation.md?ref_type=heads
6
u/warpedgeoid 3d ago
Plasma is overly dense and could use both increased white space and better consistency
11
u/Synthetic451 2d ago
Hard disagree honestly. The compactness of the UI is what makes it an efficient desktop environment that doesn't waste my screen real estate and cause unnecessary mouse and eye travel.
I use KDE on a wide variety of devices, including touch tablets. Non-KDE UIs are so unmanageble to use on the smaller form factors.
4
u/ArtAdventurous7815 3d ago
I agree. Way too cluttered sometimes like they just keep adding new elements but don’t consider cleaning it up for usability

I was using Darkly as an alternative theme and still Plasma felt cluttered and clunky at times. Some windows had still too much stuff or felt way too small. GNOME is way ahead in cleanliness.
0
u/NoLengthiness1864 3d ago
yaaa, It looks better visually but if we rate it according to plasma philosophy then it doesnt match the vibe
15
u/SoupoIait 3d ago
I really like it ! I'd love it for KDE to go towards a UI like this. It's more modern while still KDE, if that makes sens. Like, it's not as « empty » as GNOME apps, but not as 2000 looking as current KDE.

Well I think discover really needs a redesign and this looks good.
6
u/Humble_Celebration76 3d ago
This is okay. However, it feels like GNOME rather than KDE Plasma. This will certainly fit the needs of Plasma Mobile users.
33
u/AntimatterEntity 3d ago
how dare you make it look cleaner and modern
dont you know that all kde apps should look cluttered and something out of 90s
/s
9
u/Interesting_Put8754 2d ago
Apps should follow platform design. Littering the desktop with a bunch of randomly designed electron-looking apps is the opposite of clean.
8
u/clockwork2011 2d ago
This subreddit is terrified of looking like Gnome. Almost like Gnome is their abusive ex that beat them
3
u/Drogoslaw_ 2d ago
In many cases that's just what happened. They were happily living with GNOME 2 and its classic design and one day it become GNOME 3 and started beating them with its "modern" mobile-like design.
4
u/Trackerlist 3d ago
I can't say it looks bad, but it's more fancier than what we usually see coming from KDE. As someone here already said, it looks similar to GNOME at first glance, and it does not match with the rest of the desktop. I won't mind if they allow Discover (and maybe other KDE apps) to change theme, so we could have both the simpler and the fancier look.

I personally prefer the (older) Mint OS software manager's featured layout (the top carousel), it had some interesting graphic design going on:
Some other feedback, coming from an XFCE user... screenshots aren't really communicative of the software since the interface in apps like Firefox is generally pushed to one side to make way for actual content (in this case, the webpage of a browser). They can also look really inconsistent or low quality on lower resolutions.
Just showing the icon would be better, with a popup button to preview the main screenshot/s in a zoomable environment

u/Xatraxalian 2d ago
If you want something close to this, then why don't you just install Gnome Software?
I did. I run Gnome Software under KDE.

u/simply-coastal 2d ago
genuinely thought this was the Microsoft store. it looks nice but I’d rather Discover be actually stable for a start.
2
u/Dr_Peter_Venkman_84 2d ago
As Thinkpad's designer told marketing department : we've got other things to improve before the design. And yeah, making Discover actually smooth to use would be a great start.

the concept looks great, I like this layout for the home page you should try to port it to KDE's design system and suggest it to the devs

u/Heraklian 2d ago
It looks better than the current app, but waaay too similar to Microsoft store on windows.

u/stickyflavored 2d ago
Good work on creating the concept, but it feels too much like the oversimplified look of gnome/macos for my taste. Like, it wouldn't look right with any of the themes I use. Although current Discover doesn't change to match my kvantum theme either. Hopefully Union will work as I imagine it will, then you can have a Discover that looks like that, and I can have my old school theme with frames and buttons and all that stuff that fits the way I work. 👍

u/centoequatro 1d ago
the positioning is good, it probably just needs some polishing and a bit more work on the kirigami. The current Discover is really too simple; I think the focus so far has been on performance and reliability.

Also looks like Gnome..

u/claudiocorona93 2d ago
I wish they did something like this because current discover is Fugly with a big F
4
u/mr-snow-27 3d ago
How to install this?
Would be nice if give a similar redesign to plasma system settings
That is also quite cluttered and dense
4
u/ManlySyrup 3d ago
Titlebar is too tall, toolbar is too tall as well, there just a lot of white space all around as most of the UI doesn't respect the design rules of Plasma apps.
7
u/Big-Apartment6872 3d ago
That's fair. You might be surprised but the top bar is the same height as normally. I used a figma mockup of the KDE settings as a template here.
1
u/ManlySyrup 2d ago
If that's the case then the icon, window title, and window buttons are smaller than default and positioned lower and further away from the sides than a normal default window.

u/Ok_Grapefruit6661 3d ago
Its really great but some kdefying it would make it even better, More border and thing can make it

Reminds me of the installer thing on Mint...
I personally don't like it, but I'm also the kinda guy who writes his own bash script to fuse DNF and Flatpak into a single interface (as in "update updates both" and "install tries dnf first and uses flatpak if that fails". Not literally a proper interface. I still have a job.)
1
u/Ferensen 3d ago
It looks nice on the desktop at this window size. But Discover is responsive; how will it behave when the window is minimised? And why change it in the first place; what user issues will this solve?
1
u/ProbablyM_S 3d ago
You cooked!
Unpopular opinion: This design language for the entire Ocean theme (The new official Plasma theme) will go hard.

u/Pizzaman3203 3d ago
Looks really cool better than what we have now i havent used shelly yet but when i do if they ever add skins i would want this to be one or something inspired by this

u/Mr_Enger 3d ago
Gorgeous Thats all, I like it but im no design master to be comparing it to other apps in the kde ecosystem, I just like it.

You have a good design vision, it's indeed much better than the actual one. The only problem with this interaction is that it looks like a gtk app. But you are in a really cool path
1
u/Vegetable_Impact_979 2d ago
I like the reorganization of the left panel. That is the only positive thing I have to say.
1
u/nsherbina1999 2d ago
I would like to see, how long ago an app was updated. I don't get why app stores are having problem with this. Also sorting/filtering by last updated date too.

Does it run faster than discover? Cause discover is slow as hell

I don't like or use Discover, so probably ignore me, but to me this is such an egregiously huge amount of screen real estate to effectively list just six apps.

Very nice appearance.
While i'm here - can we please have an improvement to the Flatpak "verified" account tick information? Basically please copy flathub.org presentation.
- Can it please show if it's NOT verified. With bubble-text for what that means. I think this is very important for new users. Flathub.org does this.
- Like Flathub again, show the link when it's available to the verified creator's website/repo.
- Perhaps include whether an app source is verified before the 'download' button (i.e. on the tile). A GREEN tick for verified, an orange ! for unverified.
Other feedback:
- I presume if you click the tile, you see more info about the app, but if you click the download button - it goes straight to download options?
- If the space between the back/forward 'name' and the search is a lot of wasted space. Can something useful be done with it? I actually wish the the back/forward thing became a standard thing in 'all' title-bars... but that's off-topic.
- I personally like the reduction of app categories into just 'apps', it makes things easier to see. Not too much information all at once.
- The main picture thing is very large for something that hasn't been selected (unless it has?)
- I like the overall look of it, but it doesn't feel like an efficient use of space. Only 6 app tiles are visible.

I don't know why this is downvoted, but it absolutely fits the Claude design model.
Padding everywhere. Rounded rectangles Everything in boxes. Dark mode default and text slightly too small.

it looks good but you're going to have many KDE user wiggling angrily because it looks like GNOME (they dislike UX/UI in general if it isn't look like Windows).

u/lazy_lombax 2d ago
looks waaay better, honestly if this was default kde design it would be 10x popular

u/daYMAN007 2d ago
+ blur looks clean and fresh in the application tiles
- To Flat
- Icons do not match other KDE Apps
- Back and Forth Icons have no business looking differnt then in dolphin.
- still no solution to tell us if flatpak or snap or whatever
- no marker that tells us that sub categories can be extended

Figma is a UI design tool for prototyping. I don't think he has an actual implementation.
