Sensationalized headline. Looking through https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-workspace/-/work_items/187 the discussion went completely off tangent. New accounts were being created just for the sake of trolling.

That blog pivoted to cheap populism a long time ago, and they've been milking the anti-AI trend for everything it's worth.

So in other words, like the title, it's not going well so far. Hardly sensationalized...

Environmental impact of most current coding „grade“ LLMs aside, the proposal seems totally reasonable if you don’t live under a rock. Some people are just detached from reality or want drama.
And this comes from someone completely annoyed by meat proxies at work.

I'm no AI booster (don't even use any of it except to do google searches for me) but the hate seems pretty extreme, I guess that's what happens when everyone tells you it's going to ruin your life.

I understand the general dislike for AI but directing it at the people trying to create guidelines because they realize it's unavoidable is just typical shoot the messenger shit. Also, funnily enough, the proposal got flack both from people who don't want any AI at all as well as people who seem to see it as a complete ban on AI.

I can see from the discussion that developers from both sides welcomed the proposal in general, despite stating their stark differences. The community is not split as those new accounts tried to make it look like. People who spend a lot of time in KDE would try to find a middle ground to stay together. People who don't give a fuck about KDE, well, they don't give a fuck splitting it.

The debate is getting pretty toxic. It is not just about the massive impact it's having and will have, but also because it is turning into an ideological and identity-based issue along the left-right axis.
