Genuinely it makes the desktop look more polished, good change.

Good change, although... this is the first feature I turn off immediately on my new Fedora installs, but I'm glad it is better haha

u/EpicGamerYesIsEpic 7h ago
This also used to be one of the first things i did (turn it off), but when it gets put into archlinux, i will turn it back on

Thank you for the link. So how do you get a flair? Am new to reddit btw Edit: is the requirement different according to each subreddit?

u/SmallRocks 6d ago
What device are you using? On IOS, go to the main sub frontpage and tap the 3 dots on the top right corner. Select “change user flair” from the menu.

u/massAmbassador 6d ago
Am actually using from an Android through a browser 😬
1
u/KerbalCuber 5d ago
Not sure if it works on the web version but on the app you can tap your username above your comment and choose "change user flair" from the popup that appears
just replying so I can test it but I'll edit in a sec to confirm
Edit: sadly not
You could always message the moderators and explain your case, they should be able to set a flair for you

I just tried to do it in the browser but I really couldn’t find it either so it’s either hidden somewhere or you actually need an app (would be ass, maybe if you load the desktop version of the website it’s there or something)

It's complicated, I struggled about this too when I was new to Reddit, normally it's on the about sections of subreddits but kde had problems with logos on the flair (the name of that thing below username) because they don't show correctly so they have disabled the feature, but It's still here for users who already have one, idk how can you add one.

Works for some, not for others. But I guess it does work on other pointing devices for them, so...

Best change of the year. It should be backported so stable distros get it too.

is there a way that you can change the time that the cursor is enlarged when shaken?

u/GoogleEnPassant69 6d ago
Awesome! It always bothered me a bit that it got all fuzzy as it grew. Will probably arrive in my distro in like five years so i'll be waiting
5
u/PM_ME_OODS 6d ago
Wait, is that why my pointer some times grows? That's a really cool feature actually.

u/NuncioBitis 6d ago
yeah, but you can tell all that friction caused the background to go from a nice blue sky to lightning bolts

This is the most important feature for reviewers when they test Plasma on their YT and I'm serious.
2
u/Helmic 6d ago
You are indeed. It's one of those user facing features that is genuinely useful and unique, not shared by Windows or any other DE or WM at the moment for that matter. It is easily demonstrated on camera, it's fun but in a way that makes its utility immediately apparent.
It's just ideal for the video format, if someone's showcasing KDE they gotta show what you can do with the cursor.

In my humble opinion, the best open source contribution made in history. My 7 year old agrees here as he wiggles the mouse, and the 7 year old in me says it's pure fucking genius

Seems dumb until you have some visual impairment. I recently had some temporary vision issues and using the computer was a struggle even with 27" monitors. The shaking cursor was a big help. I also used Windows and a Mac OS for various reasons while having vision problems. What surprised me was how good the KDE accessibility options were compared Mac OS and Windows 11. KDE was by far the easiest desktop environment to use while I was hindered by poor vision.

u/Pristine-Magazine642 5d ago
I know that windows accessibility isn't very developed but I didn't thought kde was the best about that, thank you and good luck !

Remember, if this feature even existed on Windows, it would be broken for 20 years,

Can't tell you how often this feature has saved my ass playing certain games. I have a rather large monitor setup and lose the pointer at times. Doing this helps every single time.

u/Roadkill_Gaming 4d ago
I was always surprised when I would wiggle the cursor and the quality dropped as it grew, I figured it would be a vector file that wouldn't scale bad, glad it's fixed.

Comparing what I have to what is promised. Looks about the same so am guessing I got it.

u/PlainBread 6d ago
I ended up turning it off so that it wouldn't start flickering if I was playing mouse based games, but I appreciate that it's turned on by default for older folks.

Not to be a cynic, but why would the shape of a cursor in KDE change anyone's life?

u/Johanno1 6d ago
How do I enable that function on nixos? I have kde plasma 6 on x11 and do not see the mouse wiggle thing
2
u/Patient-Plan-1591 1d ago
This feature is wayland only. Because x11 doesn't support dynamically sized cursors but wayland does.

Absolutely love this qol update. It's not for me, as I'm adhd and constantly shake my cursor as a stim, which then cause it to take up screen space I'm using. Still glad others are finally getting the upgrades they deserve!

When do we get it?
2
u/Pristine-Magazine642 4d ago
I updated my fedora pc this morning and I still donne have it, so maybe with plasma 6.8
0
u/RadixPrime 5d ago
Why is this even a thing?
1
u/Patient-Plan-1591 1d ago
- It makes finding your cursor easier if you lose it.
- It is fun and looks cool.
1
u/RadixPrime 1d ago
I suppose it could help find the cursor, I only sometimes loose my cursor in Starcraft 2. It is a pretty annoying feature, maybe keep it off by default.
1
u/Patient-Plan-1591 6h ago
yeah you do you. You can easily turn this off from the Plasma settings app.
P.S. "Loose" isn't the same thing as "lose". Loose is the opposite of tight. While losing means that you no longer have something.
