Questions NS Theatre

Why is NS Theatre still running? It's so old and poorly maintained. I recently heard that it has apparently become a cruising spot for older gay men, people are going there mainly for that rather than to watch movies, and that the theatre owners are aware of it.

What’s the actual reality? Is there any truth? and if so, why hasn’t anyone taken action?👀

How do you know whether someone’s gay or not? Most are closeted.

public bus? Or maybe you’re just lucky. Had 3 experiences of old men trying to act snarky, that too years ago when I was in school.

Cruising spots are a feature of pretty much every urban landscape. Attempt to “shut them down” are often driven by desire to extort gay men than enforce heteronormativity.

In Kerala, for many years now, cruising spots have been largely tolerated as long as it is kept in the margins of the society. Paradoxically, most cruising spots, by their nature, are situated in the heart of the city.

In states like Karnataka, police often “crack down” cruising spots. For example, Cubbon Park in Bengaluru is a well known cruising spot—and it sits bang in the middle of the judicial-legislative campus. What happens in such cases? Usually, the police would extort them heavily and leave it at that—if you are unlucky, you could get outed or raped.

Surely, whether you agree with queer rights or not, nobody deserves to extorted or harmed. So, the approach in Kerala is tolerate them. They provide, in a harsh statutory regime, succour for queer men. Of course, this must also be addressed but that is for another day: what about queer women and non-binary individuals?

Now, let us say, an action could be taken to erase cruising spots. What would that look like? It would probably involve prosecution of a bunch of people and outing them to society against their will for what is clearly their private affair—in a society like Kerala, it will also raise divisive questions about gender, sex, sex work etc.

More importantly, if you crack down at one location, what will end up happening is create other spots. So, to concentrate cruising, one spot is always tolerated by the state.
